random security alarm

I have recently acquired a 2008 Freelander2 SE TD4.
Does anyone know why the security alarm goes off at random for no apparent reason. Sometimes it will activate after 10 seconds, sometimes after several hours or even (once) after a couple of days. This is very annoying and can be quite embarrassing. It seems to make no difference whether the car is single or double locked. Any ideas?

Here are the results of a search for "alarm going off" from this site, I have not had this issue myself but I am pretty sure you will find your answer on this site:

When mine started doing that it was a faulty bonnet switch, turns out it's quite a common problem.
