PAS advice req. while in the Outer Hebrides!

Hi everyone, we’re currently in the Outer Hebrides with the Freelander 2. Before leaving I had the steering rack and reservoir replaced. Today a similar noise to a worn steering rack started. But it’s not necessarily on steering, more under load when turning the steering wheel.
Steering feels fine, so I’m presuming it’s a noisy pump. I’ve been nursing the car so that when the noise occurs, mainly under load, I ease off as much as possible to reduce causing further damage. After driving for around 30 miles, I noticed the noise stopped for a while, noticing a slight noise, then nothing again. I’m pretty certain it’s coming from the steering, but the steering performance hasn’t deteriorated.

Land Rover garage I use is closed. I wondered if anyone else experienced anything similar, and what are the chances of making the 700 or so miles home!
Thanks
Simon

Have you checked the level in the bottle? It could have had air in. Silver 2009 HSE

Thanks for the reply, I should have said - yes first thing I did was to pull over to check the level, and it’s fine.

I suppose you could try bleeding the system by going lock to lock four or five times holding at each extreme for a few seconds, it’s possible there could have been air in the system somewhere.

But in all honesty it sounds worse than that, good luck. Regards

David

Lovely i6 has now gone, but not me......

Please let me know if anything in my post offends you, as I may wish to offend you again......

Thanks, I will try that. I think it’s likely to be the pump.
Interestingly I expected the noise to get worse, but was surprised when it appeared to fade away. Logic would suggest maybe there’s still swarf in the system from when the rack and reservoir were replaced. Who knows?
