Instrument panel dies

Good afternoon all. I am hoping someone may have an answer to my problem. In March this year the instrument panel went blank, i sent it in under warranty and it came back fixed. In July this year the same thing happened so with some following expletives it was sent back to Land Rover again. This time they had the vehicle for approx ten weeks. They reprogrammed the Key fobs and also put a control box on the vehicle. All has been well until last Thursday. When the wife came home she told me the dash kept dying and a message kept coming on screen. I drove the car over the weekend using my key fob and nothing untoward happened. This morning going to work the wife couldn't start the car, after a couple of attempts i got it going. in the space of a 7 mile journey the dash died 5 times and a message came up saying something. I can't remember what it said. Land Rover have picked the vehicle up. After checking the car over, i sign the forms and go back inside. After 5 minutes there is a knock o0n my door, the man from Landy can't start my vehicle. I see that he has used the wifes key fob. I put mny key fob in and hey presto it starts. My Question is this. Could it be a key fob problem ie battery failing or is it more sinister ie more warranty work. Thanks in advance sorry about the long winded post.

Hello Lightwater, no I haven’t. Land Rover have the car now I was just curious as to what might be the problem. Every time I’ve had it go wrong this forum has been a better bet than the mechanics.

has the problem EVER occurred when your using your key fob ?

or does it only happen when using the 2nd key fob ?

if it has only ever happened using our wifes fob the i would suggest replacing that as the cheapest initial option and see how you go from there.

What on earth was the garage doing with your car for 10 weeks ?

I'd start by checking battery state (maybe borrow a known good battery from somewhere) and quality of the earths.
Maybe add another engine-to-battery earth as many on here have done (cheap and easy).

Put new batteries in the fobs (assuming you can). Jules

Yes, if it only happens with the wife's fob then replace the wife Laughing Jules

Jules the had to get a control module for it. They said it take eight weeks to manufacture plus they had the car two weeks prior to that. Rog no the problem does seem to be with the wifes fob.

From the description, it must be the wife's Key Fob,.
If she is the main user, swap Key Fobs with her, and see what happens.

Out of interest, what is the message that is being displayed, and have you any DTC codes stored?

If no other information/faults are showing, then is your battery old enough to require changing. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Quick update. The car is still with Land rover, This is the third week now. A message HDC failure came on the dashboard. The garage can't find any fault codes, so now they have asked if the techs can drive it for a few days to see if the dash dying will happen to them. I don't know what they can do when it does as they can't do anything when it happens to us. after this is done i will get rid.

DeepSea, firstly, I know what it feels like for them to have car for weeks without a clue of what's going on Censored

My first Freelander was the same, no codes etc etc then some old chap in Land rover garage somehow came up with the idea that it would be the module in front passenger door !!!

He was right Thumbs Up

On a previously owned Vauxhall Signum, I had nearly a year of unexplained, intermittent, instrument panel warning lights coming on.
It was under warranty and the car was investigated several times by the garage, and swaps of different modules (and their power supplies) were tried. Needless to say the car always behaved itself while in their hands, and showed no faults.

Eventually the whole actual instrument panel (which I think was expensive, so they were reluctant to try) was swapped and everything was fine.

From my own electronics experience, I think it was a dodgy power supply, within the unit, not always giving enough output.

At the time, it was quite alarming when it happened at night as some of the lights flashed on and off brightly.

So the answer to your problem, is probably unit swaps, but perhaps try reseating all the plugs and sockets around the problem. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

HDC failure or disabled normally appears when there is a voltage drop. I had a Freelander 2 that suffered horrendous problems for 3 years & the dealer was useless , including it had 4 new IPK's Instrument packs, 3 or 4 body controllers amongst thousands of pounds worth of parts.
Once it reached end of warranty I traced the fault in less than an hour due to a poor engine earth triggering off so many faults.
I simply put a volt meter on Volts from the battery negative post to the engine bell-housing and got my wife to crank it over.
In theory there should of been zero volts, in reality I had 4.2 volts at cranking. I simply put an extra earth cable from the negative battery post to one of the starter securing bolts, using 200amp cable and brass eyelets. Transformed the whole thing.
Yours sounds like a faulty key fob and battery or wiring faults, most likely poor connection.
fault code reading wont find an intermittent fault, they need to drop the diagnostic tool and start good old diagnostic fault finding. Jaguar x-type sport gone

I agree with jules and oldgeezer.

Get a new battery.

Then check earths and cable connections for damage or corrosion.

A recent new battery cured my odd random error messages at start up, including HDC and Navigation System errors. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
