Aftermarket CarPlay/Android Auto plus navigation and more!

While the Alpine system in my FL2 is pretty good, I’m very impressed with the Apple CarPlay unit my daughter has in her Jeep. A bit of browsing unearthed this unit - http://www.carnaviplayer.com/aftermarket-n...-lr2-p-914

As well as CarPlay/Android Auto it has navigation plus input for a reversing camera and even an OBDII display.

Has anyone any experience of it?

Thanks for this link. It looks to be very similar to the one I linked to. It seems, however, to have an Android focus - will it provide Apple CarPlay?

Searching for Xtrons brought up this thread - https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic30709.html?highlight=xtrons

Looks to be the same thing. Interesting ... Very Happy

United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 SE Auto Santorini Black

Oooooh, this looks nice. Does this just connect into the back of the head unit? Could be a good half way house from replacing the whole thing? Learned to drive in 2011.
Bought a Micra - great little car
"Upgraded" to Kia Sportage - hated it
Proper upgrade to FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - tailgate paint issues, fuel gauge rewire, transfer box failure at 36k miles, clutch at 60k
Reconditioned diff at 70k ish
Sold at 84k and now on a DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental

The thread I’ve linked to above pretty much explains everything.

Hi Simon, The product you linked to looks good but it appears to need a $69 add on before it will do Apple CarPlay. I've not needed to look at this for the Xtrons unit I fitted as I am a Samsung boy but it might be possible with the same or a similar add on?

Many thanks for replying. Yes, as far as I can tell these Android headunits need some sort of dongle to run CarPlay and I’ve started another thread asking if anyone has such a set up.

Found this one which uses the factory screen: https://www.navtool.com/land-rover-lr2-200...rplay.aspx

A disadvantage of this one might be that it does not use the touch part of the screen but has a separate remote. And it seems you have to buy adapters for connecting the phone.

Video of it is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t87loVT4n1I

When i was researching in to replacing the factory sat-nav, everything i saw wouldnt connect in to the existing audio of the car. Most of the sat-nav replacements used a tiny little speaker built in to output any sound.

So i just replaced the factory radio with a 10" unit:

Performance wise, I wish id now gone with a different unit, but... It does the job. Google maps + Spotify built in to the cars audio speakers.

Hi! Did this mean you got digital radio? I really want to get a new unit for my husband for Xmas as his is SO old!! But he doesn’t have digital radio at the moment and that’s what I want it to provide but from what I can see none of the units provide that?!

A lot of the units have an additional extra DAB radio add-on unit that you can purchase seperately. The benefit being you wouldnt need the internet to listed to digital radio.

As most of these units are Android based, you can install any other Radio Apps you desire (EG: TuneIn Radio) - But these would need an internet signal, which is easily added by simply tethering to your phone Smile

That’s great, thanks for letting me know!! Although I’m guessing we will lose the use of steering wheel controls?!

Some units will come with all the extras to keep the steering wheel controls also Smile

Or you teach/program the unit to do certain action on the steering wheel control presses.

Depends if you get it professionally installed or DIY route. Definitely possible either way

Don’t forget that the Xtrons unit (essentially the same as the one I linked to in the first post) is fitted in addition to the existing audio unit and connects to it via the AUX IN. That being the case, while the steering wheel volume controls will obviously work, it’s hard to see how any of the other controls could work. Of course if the existing audio unit is replaced with a new Android unit, then presumably it may be possible to get all the steering wheel controls operational with it.

You might want to check that you have decent DAB coverage in your area. Driving around Dorset and Devon it's often a waste of time except on major roads with no hills around and I often go back to FM. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
