England 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Firenze Red
Six Year Service

I am now due to have a six year B service on my MY13 / Nov 13 HSE Luxe with full dealer service history and 39k miles on the clock...

The Land Rover Service Schedule has brake fluid change every three years and flexible hoses every six years both regardless of mileages so enquiring after price with three main dealers, Sheffield, Chesterfield an Nottingham, each have told me £390 inc vat for the B service which appears to be Land Rover menu pricing.

One has offered a brake fluid change for a further £85 inc vat, one said don’t bother with brake fluid and two have said don’t bother with flexible hoses. (One said nothing at all beyond £390 inc vat)

Question then for those who have had the six year / 72k miles service... should I not bother with hoses and fluid? Is £390 a good price (perhaps it’s the best I’ll get). Is £475 a good price with brake fluid or...

Should I be looking an indie like Maltings Off Road in Doncaster who say £270 on their website? Never used an indie before so could I perhaps be saving a few quid but not getting genuine parts or decent oil etc.

Though LR recommend the brake fluid and hoses this is really backside covering, water content of the fluid can easily be checked and basically it is dependent on how the new fluid is stored and the humidity of where it is stored, it could be worse than what you have, the hoses again are dependent on use country of use, spending all its time in the African bundoo with temperatures in the high 30's with the suspension working overtime perhaps they may need changing, but in the UK probably not, next year if it's a SD you get the coolant changed with the water pump anyway my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

depends if you intended to keep the car much longer Question

brake hoses should be a visual check and see IF they need replacing, probably not as said above ^

if you plan on keeping it I would go indp but that does not mean not genuine parts and def not cheap oil
(think yours is 5w30 C1) ask the question but good indp Will use the correct oil

at your miles pop the pollen filter out yourself and have a look at it Question if its clean tell the indp not to bother changing it Shocked

Not sure if a main dealer will strip clean the brakes in a service but a indp might well and push a bit of brake fluid through the system for a bit more ££ again its worth asking for a Full breakdown of whats done.

Next year is going to be a bigger service with the belt on a Sd4 and Haldex? ect

if you dont plan keeping it just go for an oil and filter change Question

I’ve been in the trade for 45 years and I’ve never changed a flexible brake hose 'just because'. Changed a fair few when they’ve shown signs of cracking but again, compared to years ago, I haven’t seen a cracked/perished hose or seen one fail for at least 10 years. My Evoque is just over 7 years old, I’ve had it for 4 years and the hoses are still the originals and are fine. I changed my fluid a year or so ago just because I could and because it cost me nothing but it didn’t need changing. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Thanks guys...

It is a second car to a little petrol engined city car that does most of the work these days and for the miles it does - barely 4K since this time last year - along with it’s excellent condition and towing ability, I sort of plan to hang on to it.

I will stick with a standard B Service and possibly brake fluid this year, maybe an Indy but if not, I can live with £390 + b/fluid at a main dealer.

My 2 cents (pennies), if you are going to buy new brake hoses, go for aftermarket stainless steel braided flexible lines, they will likely cost the same or less than LR prices and last a long time.

Put these on mine when it was serviced and new brake fluid done at the same time, no extra cost on the service at independent Land Rover garage

You didn’t mention the significantly firmer pedal you get with braided hoses. A very useful mod.

You clearly have no experience of decent braided hoses. This is not the first car I have fitted them to. Why do you think all “performance” cars (and Aircraft) have braided hoses? Braided hoses have minimal expansion allowing all the pedal effort to be applied to the brake and none wasted on expanding flexibles. The only advantage of rubber hoses is they are cheap! (Although at LR prices you may not think so!)

I used to use a local indie and they just tested the brake fluid and said it was OK. You can buy a tester for a few quid on eBay. I got one and tested all of the cars in the family and found that the only one that showed up with a warning was my son''s Porsche 911 and with six piston calipers all round it took a lot of fluid but still an easy job. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
