Wheel wobble on new journey, which totally disappears.

Hello I wonder if you can help me with a strange problem.
I have a Manual 2010 XS TD4.e

Upon starting a journey after about half a mile and when I reach roughly 40mph I get a severe steering wheel wobble which can be felt through the whole car. If I either hit the brakes or change gear the wobble disappears and the LR drives normally for the rest of the journey, whether 2 miles or 150 miles. When it happens it feels rotational.

There are No DTC's recorded, and I have had the front wheels balanced.
It has been in to the local LR Stealership, they managed to repeat the problem once, but as usual it can’t be repeated again. They have checked the suspension & bushes, wheel & wheel bearings, drive shafts, brakes and everything appears to be tight and ok. They have no idea as it does it once then disappears,

All they can suggest is stripping the gearbox and/or transfer box, but as they said they might not find anything.
Does anyone out there have any idea where or what the problem could be?

I am no techie expert, but I guess your description could fit a few scenarios, however I recall something very similar to what you describe happening to me, not long after I bought the car, so bad i thought the wheel was going to drop off. steering wheel was vibrating severely.

Turned out to be front brake caliper seizing up onto the disc, trying pumping the brake pedal a few times when it happens, 2017 SEAT Ateca 4drive 2.0 xcellence (May 2022 -

I too would have said brakes seizing, but interesting that changing gear also stops it. Does the gear change sort it 100% of the time? Learned to drive in 2011.

I must admit I always hit the brakes, it was the LR Mechanic got rid of it by changing gear.
I will see when I go out this evening and up date you. Thanks for the advice so far...

Chris it may be worth doing a proper 4 wheel alignment, just down the road from you in Bleanporth. If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

After a run feel the hubs / alloys and see if any are warm, sticking callipers are a good possibility here.

They might all be a little warm after a road run. The ones on the sunny side might be a bit warmer, but you're looking for one that's significantly warmer than it's mate on that side.

Do you run stock or aftermarket pads? I use aftermarket pads, and I'm not sure they seat in the calipers as tightly as the OEM. Also did you replace the pad clips when the brakes were done last? On the rears, I think that needs to be done (aftermarket pads don't come with them in my experience).

Thanks for the advice/updates and Sorry for the delay.

After 6 journeys with no problems, the seventh one had the slight judder which disappeared quite quickly with no intervention Confused .
I did notice as I reversed out of a parking space there was a slight "squeal" from a rear wheel, so im guessing the handbrake is sticking slightly.
It is booked in for a service tomorrow, so im getting them to look at the handbrake (a bit annoyed as the cables, pads and drums/discs were replaced only 6 months ago) and im getting the Haldex serviced at the same time. (Even though I was told it doesn't need doing unless im getting problems with it).
Will probably get the tyres rotated as well, then rebalanced and maybe tracked.

Will bring you up to speed later in the week.

Is the vibration related to the road speed? We had something like this and it turned out to be a CV joint wearing. If you imagine that the joint is loose then when it's under load it stays in one position which may or may not be out of balance hence the vibration can vary according to recent driving conditions. You can check CVs by jacking the wheel up so that the shaft is free to move and feel for play at either end. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Well, the handbrake was stuck on the O/S.
That has been released and a B service carried out last Wednesday
Touch wood the wobble hasn't reoccured since.
I did ask for a Hadex service but that wasn't done as someone ordered rear diff oil instead of Haldex oil.
The LR Stealer did say we definately dont recommend having the Haldex services unless it is showing signs of problems. In fact we see more trouble after they carry out a service. Dont really know what they mean by that.
As far as the handbrake is concerned it's not seized, but it hardly holds me on a hill or my drive, and then only after the handbrake is pulled up to its limit. I was going to wait and see if the wobble comes back and then adjust it from behind the handbrake.
I had a look at the bar that holds the 2 cables and it is at about 30 degrees from square. The end nearest the front is the O/S cable. Does that mean its loose in comparison to the N/S ?
I had new cables,, disks/drums, shoes and fixings fitted 6 months ago, and now this again.
It's going back to the Stealer next week to sort out, which I had to book in to get it adjusted. P.s. I'm not paying for it.

So that's the ongoing story to date, and I will let you know what happens at the end of the week.

Well going by that I take it you are using Shukers Aberystwyth.

Other manufacturers recommend Haldex service every two years, I said this to Richard (service manager shukers) who give me " it causes more trouble" and Voilà back it went under warranty (JUST) for new Haldex .
