Hi, i’ve got a 2013 SD4 auto with 72k on the clock. Its always been serviced regularly. Today on the return leg of an outing in the mountains in france we were getting intermittent scraping noises and accompanying hesitation on over the 40 mile drive home. This happened in both auto and command shift modes. If its of any relevance i did the outward journey in command shift mode keeping up a quick pace with a friends BMW X3.

The cycle seems to be that the car tries to do something 3 times in succession with 3 scraping sounds where there is a power reduction each time then trying again fairly soon after. I’m guessing that the auto-box or haldex is trying to do something and that each time the ecu is reducing engine power to reduce ware on the transmission/haldex.

Another thought i had was could the car by applying the brakes automatically?

Is that the dreaded 'Variable Geometry Turbocharger Vane Actuator' noise.

Over-Boost Pressure
During periods of medium to hard acceleration, the turbocharger is required to produce a limited period of over-boost pressure from the compressor to meet the current engine fuelling requirement.
The ECM will request and allow the REA to move the variable vanes toward the closed position to increase the velocity of the already high-speed turbine wheel.
The over-boost condition is allowed by the ECM for the limited period.


It is a kind of rattling noise/vibration which in my experience occurs in a few quick bursts.

The vanes are moved at low engine speeds as well, to speed up turbo.
I have also had a couple of occurances at engine start. As it has only happened a few intermittent times I have ignored it, for now.

I hope that I am right with what I think is happening to my car and it is the not beginnings of something more serious.

Ah, this is a noise I have heard many times, and gone into a panic about.

Its very intermittent, and when it does happen its always when I'm setting off from stationary. Updated- Waiting for a Scotland v England 6 Nations home win. 24th Feb 2018
