Loss of power when towing.

Freelander 2 loss of power.
My freelander 2 2009. 2.2 diesel auto is fine solo. BUT as soon as I put my caravan on it dies on hills. I have been towing for 40 odd years. 2 with this motor. No probs until very recently. Caravan weight & brakes ok, not changed so it's not the added weight. Came back from S wales last week & down to 1st gear on some hills with thoughts of not going to make it. As I said it's fine solo. EGR Valve, Turbo Solenoid & Turbo pipes have been suggested. NO warning lights on dash. So stumped. Any suggestions please. Ta.

Read the engine ECU error codes. For sure some are stored as the car entered limp mode when loosing power. Then you start from there...

Did that a few weeks ago & the only fault showing was throttle housing which was replaced. I didn't realise it had not fixed the problem till I started towing again. I have booked another diagnostic tomorrow but I suspect as it did not show any faults last time it wont show any this time?? as I say I'm stumped. I have also put this thread on caravan talk & most say it is EGR valve or split in turbo pipe. But if it is a split would I not hear it? I will hopefully know more tomorrow, just needed some sugestions as to where to look. Thanx.

Been to garage this morning, plugged in the diagnostic kit & as suspected the only fault showing was Fuel temperature gauge. Zero'd the fault nothing else showing. Sooooo I've got to take it in on Thursday? so he can start eliminating bits starting with the turbo pipes etc & egr valve. Gave it a run down our A500 on way, running like a dream, accelerating up hills, NO probs. But as soon as I put the van on it's flat. So car and caravan both in Thurs fingers crossed. 🤞

13 pin electrics or 7 ?
Are all the lights working on the caravan trailer correctly with no interference ?
If a tail light is back feeding a brake lamp bulb it cuts the power off.

May be disconnect the caravan plug for a few moments whilst towing and see if it fixes it !

Have you seen this earlier thread, are these symptoms similar to yours.
Read Alex's answer about the effect of fuel filter on the fuel temperature and the engine power.

Hi Oldgeezer & Ian. VERY interesting old thread. Thankyou very much. I have mailed it to my m8. I'll let you know the outcome. As for my caravan electrics, I'm on 13 pin & everything seems to be working ok. My fuel filter was changed on last service, I did ask him today, BUT he might have used aftermarket filter. We will know soon. THANKS AGAIN. Ridge.

Welllllll. He has fitted a gen fuel filter after the supplier ordered an oil filter???? Dunno yet, I need to hitch the van up and give it a tow. If not the next step is to change the sensor above the filter as this is the fault it was originally showing. I'll let you know after I've towed the van. Thumbs Up Strange cuz this is my second Free2 and never had a prob before.

Loss of power when towing.

Hi M8....Yep worked a treat.. Put van on today towed it 52 miles from Stoke, up passed the roaches Buxton which is steep & long enough to test any motor. 50 miles an hour all the way up, instead of 15. Changed down fine. Came back from Buxton via the Pennines to Congleton which is another good tester. No probs. 22.5 to the gallon & no probs. Feel confident enuff to go away again now. Thanx a bunch for your info m8. & good luck. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Moral of the story is don't buy carp parts

Cheap turns out expensive trying to trace a fault to a part replaced once already. In my field of work most of the problems I see are caused by carp parts which normally makes the job twice as expensive as buying genuine in the first place

Glad its fixed well done Thumbs Up Jaguar x-type sport gone

So we're thinking an aftermarket fuel filter was the problem? Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Well, looking that way. Seams to have solved the problem. Dunno if it was slightly blocked & not supplying enough fuel?? I'm away Tuesday for 10 days towing so heres hoping. Confused Guy on Caravan talk with a Nissan Xtrail has same problem, he's goint try changing his filter. It's certainly the cheapest option. Thanx again for all your replies. Thumbs Up

I am sure your issue is the fuel filter. I had exactly the same problem when towing. I now change the filter every year using a genuine item from Dan. Never had a problem since.
