Does a throttle body need calibrating after replacement

After some advice please. Getting the throttle body replaced on my 2008 2.2l on Tuesday as it's on it's way out. It's being done at a local garage (not LR linked) and have read it may need calibrating. I've looked on Google and there is loads about other vehicles but not freelander 2.

Can anyone confirm if it does need calibrating when changed' how to do it and if its through a LR plug in job how much it may cost.

Thanks.

I fitted a new one to my 2007 Freelander couple of weeks ago, starts & runs like its always done so I dont think so. used to judder a bit on pressing stop plus engine management light was on, now I have neither of those problems.

When I fitted mine I switched the ignition on waited for the throttle body to stop hunting then started the engine, ran a bit rough for about 30 sec then was OK.

Changed my throttle body today as ECU was throwing codes.

As expected, gears were stripped, and butterfly was stuck partially closed (about 20%). when I tried to move it it snapped to fully open.
Could this be cause of poor-ish fuel consumption? 34-35 on motorway cruise, 28-29 round town for an auto.

Also, having reset codes with my cheap USB reader, they came back after a short run. Does it need something more sophisticated to remove them?

It does shut down a lot better now I must admit.

I’ve recently replaced my throttle body and I asked Freelander Specialist in Norfolk and was told that you don’t need to recalibrate it. Groucho Marks once said. I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member. 😬

I reset my engine management light/fault with a cheap reader & its not come back on at all. Maybe you still have a fault.

Only fault code I had was P02E5 which after looking up was throttle body. Replaced it & now all ok.

There is an old discussion here that implies that there is a calibration process.

I don't think it's essential at all. I used JLR SDD to calibrate it for good measure but it started/stopped just fine before I did this.

You may want to buy a code reader so you can reset the fault codes. In my case the throttle body caused the EGR system to go haywire, throwing valve stuck open AND closed codes at the same time, along with an engine management light. A bizarre thing to be sure, but once the part was changed all was well again. Driven 200 miles since then and no throttle body or EGR problems have returned.

Good luck! Smile

Thanks all.

Well throttle body changed today and the engine ticks over, drives and stops (no overrun) so much better its remarkable.

No calibration done but cant feel or hear any reason from the engine to indicate why I should be concerned.

I'll update in a month

I can only assume that the calibration (if it exists) would just define the end stops so that motor doesn't keep pushing and potentially churning up the gears. We have had 6 FL2s in the family and only one has had a throttle body problem. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

Car was in at JAS Landrover yesterday for new cambelt and auto gearbox flush. Asked them to check
DTC's. They also ran throttle body calibration. All error codes now gone, and didn't reappear after run home, so now happy bunny. Andy
