No electronic brake,the handbrake shoes are inside the drum only used with the handbrake but a pain to get the retaining springs on when changing,adjusters seize up .its swings and roundabouts.

On the Auto, the EPB has to be applied manually and can either be released manually or by driving off. There are no situations where the car itself applies the EPB and selecting D or R does not release the parking brake.

You can activate it as an emergency stopper. This may be of interest and there are other vids on google.

Getting mine ready for MOT so I will be replacing my rear pads and discs on my Freelander 2 2014, with electronic hand brake in the next few days I went for Pagid brake discs, pads, new calliper anti rattle springs and ceramic brake grease from Euro Car Parts about £73 (with discount of 45%) should have been £133.

For a Manual, you don't want the EPB to apply automatically, you should Push the EPB button DOWN whilst switching off the ignition and removing the key.
For an Auto, just don't apply it. The above should be fine if you are leaving the disks on and just adjusting the EPB.

Found this bit of info about 2013MY EPB.

Cabin space and safety are improved with the introduction of an intelligent electric parking brake which adjusts brake force according to the slope the vehicle is parked on. The system is so intelligent it even takes into account whether the brakes are hot or cold. If hot, the system ‘wakes up’ periodically to ensure clamping force is not lost as the brakes cool down. Despite being operated by a single switch, the electric parking brake may still be used as an emergency brake, automatically selecting the most stable braking method by employing skid prevention techniques. An additional safety feature ensures the brake cannot be released unless the driving seat is occupied.

I haven't noticed anything in the handbook about this but have found ours won't auto release if a door is open. Mine, Saab convertible
