First time I have owned a fully automatic , and just wanted other advice , when I come to a temporary stop and hold the car on the brake, I always put the gear shift into neutral, becosee I think the car will be fighting against itself , with it in drive and me hold in back on the brake, so the question is do I need to keep putting it I to neutral or leaving it in drive is fine and won't cause any damage?

And advice would be great .

I’ve heard people on here say it’s fine to hold it on the break and others have said it puts strain on certain parts,personally I do the same as you do and I always have done since getting this car which was my first auto too.

Hold it on the brake.
When I first owned my original FL2 I played around with putting it in neutral etc but was caught out by the hill hold gradually releasing and went slowly into the car behind. (and yes he must have stopped really close)

The SD4 automatically engages Neutral when stationary for more than a few seconds, in D and with footbrake applied

Leave in D and don't panic. The days of cooking autoboxes by doing that are long gone

'Do not allow the vehicle to remain stationary for any length of time, with a gear selected and the engine running. Always select P or N if the engine is to idle for a prolonged period.'

If I'm at traffic lights I leave it in D. If the Spit Bridge (Sydney Northern Beaches) is going up to let boats through for 5 or so minutes I put it in P. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Hi Lighwater, the stop length I am on about is a minute or less, at traffic lights junctions etc .

I have a SD4 2013 auto and when I stop in drive the auto box stays in drive and taking my foot off the brake allows the car to creep forward. I certainly does not select neutral. The drive to the wheels is not "strong".

I always select neutral at traffic lights or anywhere that I'm going to be stationary for more than a few seconds. I've always driven autos that way. Mechanical sympathy is the way I think of it. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

The exact wording in my handbook is.

Do not allow the vehicle to remain stationary for any length of time with a gear selected and the engine running. Always select P or N if the engine is to idle for a prolonged period.


I always took it that the autobox drive disengaged when stationary with the footbrake on.
I took it that it did this by releasing the pressure on all the brake bands etc within the gearbox, so the input part of the gearbox would be turning but no drive is transmitted to the output shaft.
(I cannot find the necessary link to this so I may be wrong for FL2)

Of course it re-engages gear as soon as the brake is released to give you the creep forward function.

The whole point of an automatic is start stop traffic. The last thing one wants to be doing is putting it into neutral every 15 seconds! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Mine suffers occasionally with auto-box jolt that has been covered at some length on here and which I’m hoping my Indy can remedy when the car goes in for its MOT next week. It’s partly for that reason that I shift into neutral if stationary at lights etc
