Insurence check

I just came across this website for checking if the other party in a RTA is insured and by whom.

https://www.mib.org.uk/check-insurance-det...-accident/

It might be useful to bookmark.

A vehicle needs to be insured to obtain road tax so the DVLA site can inform you of tax and MoT status therefore it’s good bet if they are valid it’s insured for someone to drive and there is a third party liability.

Problem is, once tax and MOT are obtained, insurance can be cancelled either by the policy holder or the company for lack of payments. So a car could well be taxed and MOT'd but lacking insurance.

On an interesting aside:

I have used that site to get insurance details so that my wife could make a claim against a driver who damaged her passengers door in a Sainsbury's car park and walked off without realising that she was sitting in the car and had seen him do it. She collared him when he came back to his car and although she got his name and phone number and an offer to pay for the damage when he found out that it would cost about £500 to fix he suddenly stopped answering his phone. She paid around £4.95 or so and got his insurance details including policy number and put in a claim explaining the circumstances. She had to provide one estimate from the garage of her choice and got the go ahead for the repair a couple of days later. It was £4.95 well spent! Thumbs Up

Had a car damaged parked outside my house once and I was lucky enough to spot it happening. It had been hit by a car that parked outside a block of flats at the end of my street and I knew it was driven by a blond woman although I did not know her name. Contacted the police and gave them the details that I had.
They came back to me about a month later saying thay were unable to trace the owner as the registered keeper lived about 50miles away but had sold it a few months before and the buyer had never registered it in their name. This was before the seller was obliged to send the book away and before I knew about that website.
I only ever saw the other car once more after that so never got to confront the woman. Ended up repairing my car myself but as there was only 8 flats in the block it was kind of obvious that the Police didn't try that hard to find out who had hit my car. As that was a few years ago I would imagine given all the cuts and how busy they are if it happened again today all i'm likely to get is an incident number to give to my insurance and not even a token investigation Big Cry

I once worked on a secure nuclear research establishment and saw a visitor's car hit a car in the car park outside the building. I phoned the site police who escorted him back to check out the damage. I could see him looking up at my building opposite and thinking "what b****d saw me do that?" Noticed light scuff marks on both nearside doors which hopefully will polish out; fortunately not dented but still bloody annoying. Why do people need to drive that Censored close?
