My method of keeping safe when followed to closely is to double my own braking distance. That is to leave at least 4 seconds between my self and the car in front.
That way I can brake slower when faced with an obstacle, and hopefully, the idiot behind will have room to react.

The idiot behind wonders why you're going so slow.

I rode down the A1 from Scotch Corner last week and there were far too many cars in the outside lane doing 60mph with an empty road in front of them and empty lanes inside them. And they wonder why you're right up their arse!!

There’s nothing wrong with hanging back a bit from the car in front and I for one won’t be driving any slower than they are. I’ll just have more time to react. It’s also easier on the engine, gearbox, tyres, brakes and therefore wallet.

I did not say that I drove any slower than the rest of the traffic in that lane.
In fact I always speed up or slow down to match the speed of the rest of the traffic in any motorway / dual carriageway lane, and move to the left once it is wise and safe to do so. (which is most of the time)

The ease in which the FL2 accelerates into available gaps, and overtakes, is one of the things I enjoy about driving. Also I like the high driving position which allows me to see well ahead over the traffic to anticipate problems.
