Twisted Dipstick

I did an oil check yesterday after 700 miles, and was a bit surprised when I withdrew the dipstick to find it had more twists in it than a pigs tail. It's one of those long flat bendy ones, but I've never seen a corkscrew one before! It was also pretty tricky to get out and kept catching when I tried to push it back in, but I guess that could be down to the twists on what should be a flat dipstick? Surely it's not meant to be like that? Has anyone else checked theirs?

Nightfox,

I did a few times and according to the description you gave, I think it's normal.

The oil level after 13.000 km was below minimum so my advice: try to get out the dipstick every 5000 km just to be sure Embarassed

From your description mine is exactly the same - an aluminium foil corkscrew. Doesn't look right does at all.

Mine is all bendy aswell. Think it is designed like that so it finds its own way back down the hole!

My dealer gave me 1/4 ltr of oil and told me that for the first few thousand miles the new engine block will soak up oil and you will need to keep it topped up. So keep pulling out the bendy thing and check until the oil settles down

I'm twisted too, and the dipstick as well Rolling with laughter What puzzles me is the fact the oil is all smeared up the dipstick and distorts the reading you get, so have topped up the oil to where I guess it should be Bow down

Just checked the oil level (with the corkscrew dipstick!) it is at halfway between the limits. I have already added 1 litre at 7000 miles, I'm now at 11,700 miles, so with 3000+ miles to service it looks like I'll be topping up again to safely get to first service !!!

Nope soak up is the best description as the high carbon content block does just that - it soaks up lube in the first 500-1000miles

And you should see the silly dipstick that a TDv6 RRS comes with - a very flexible piece of wire some plastic beads stuck to it, it is very difficult to read even when the oil is well used and black! I think LR bought a job load of these awful things from Ford Peugeot Citroen when they bought in the engines. How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

New dipstick?

Hi guys, recently bought my '58 XS 2.2 TD4 and was going through the usual fluid checks and noticed the dipstick is completely twisted.
I don't think it's by design? Anyone know where I can a new one, it's only a little thing but bugs me!

It's twisted by design just like the owners Thumbs Up I'd hazard a guess for rigidity and as a wipe for better reading of the level.

Apparently it's twisted to allow insertion easier and stop it kinking, I won't be testing this pesonally Shocked
