Isn't it coincidental that it featured the late departed Aretha Franklin singing "Respect" Crying or Very sad

Unfortunately and for whatever reason (I guess it's about profitability and survival) JLR has lost interest in this market. Last week I dropped into Mole Valley Farmers in South Moulton, Devon. My FL2 was the only LandRover in the car park. Everything else was Jap 4x4s and pickups and increasingly I am seeing the likes of L200s and Hiluxes carrying surf boards and other lifestyle kit. Whatever the new Defender is, it's going to be a long hard slog to get the market back. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

That’s a very interesting point that even the trendy types have moved on.

LR seem very good at filling wafer thin gaps in the Range Rover range, but to have gone to sleep on the job with the Defender replacement is unforgivable. This should all have happened at least 10 years ago (and preferably 40 years ago!).

I spent a weekend in Northumbria earlier this year, and apart from some a few Def series being driven by ageing farmers, it was Jap everywhere you looked. Updated- Waiting for a Scotland v England 6 Nations home win. 24th Feb 2018

There's an obsession with Jap 4x4's out here in Australia, although the latest Hilux has really dropped the ball. They are having huge problems with the DPF causing them to blow masses of white smoke out the exhaust, plus their airboxes are letting through a lot of dust causing concern about premature engine wear. Toyota has no fix yet and seem to be in damage control mode.
The latest star in the pickup dual cab market is the Ford Ranger, they are literally everywhere. There's an upmarket off road/rally version out in a month called the Raptor that is already sold out and it hasn't been released yet. The waiting list is well into next year. It comes with 33" tyres, 285mm ground clearance, rear locker, and 850mm wading depth as standard from the factory.
Sorry to say that Land Rovers are pretty much just expensive city cars due to the way they have evolved. Nobody wants to trash a car worth so much money. And please, stop touting a car as an off road machine when it has 19" plus rims with rubber band slim tyres, it's embarrassing.

Having spent 3 months in the outback, 99 out of a 100 cars are diesel. We really suffered from being fumigated to death with the diesel fumes from old and or poorly maintained cars everytime we were at a rest stop or scenic parking areas. More so as a lot of these massing rigs are use 25+ litres per 100 km.

The 18 inch "poodle" tyres on my car are simply not suitable for the outback no matter how carefully I adjusted the pressure. Even if a backroad is not overly corrugated, you often get very nasty surprises, especially driving into the sun. Also I put a black teeshirt on the dashboard to stop the reflection off the windscreen. So I had to drive even slower so not to damaged the car. Further taking into account dangerously remote areas where you really do not want anything to go wrong.

I couldn't understand the high number of cars who would sit so closely in your dust trail & would not overtake (even though I got fed up with this) slowing to let them overtake.

A few times I pulled off to a safer place & turned off the engine as the thick dust would sit in the air for kilometres in still air.

My mechanic said the air filter was full of red dust. It was replaced the week before we went away. I did have a spare one with me as we were not quite sure how long we would be away & or the levels of dust. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

If your air filter is now full of red dust your cabin filter will also be similar. One hopes your mechanic is a contortionist Sad FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

You need to use your compressor to blow out the air filter every couple of days. That red dust gets into everything except the engine hopefully. The rest of the world is too civilized now and 4wd's are getting softer as a result. Most people in Europe would be absolutely astonished at how much is spent on addons to 4wd's here. It's pretty normal to buy something like a Triton, L200 in the UK, for around $40k, then spend another $20k on accessories to make it capable enough to handle the conditions. Things like suspension lift, bullbar, towbar, snorkel, radio, driving lights, winch, bash plates, diff locks, off road tyres, compressor, canopy, drawers, fridge slide, rock slider side steps, roof racks....blah blah. You can't drive 5 minutes without seeing a fully kitted out 4wd here. I can drive a month in Europe and barely see a real 4wd.
