I had a talk with a freelander dealer who said that the uneven wear was excessive, but I would have to pay for the new tyres and the reallignment of the tracking as the wear had not been observed during the 15k service, and that the car was over a year old !

I did point out that the car was purchased from new, and that I hoped that I had more than a year's warranty ! I said I would have my solicitor check my purchase aggreement with the dealer and also check my position with respect to the car's geometry and whether I should be driving the vehicle. My concern was that with the positive camber and/or toe in could, in adverse weather conditions (snow and ice), affect the advanced features of the vehicle in that they might not work in a correct and proper manner.

My car is going back for the heater recall and my dealer will investigate the tyre wear then.

I didn't get any reports on how my tyres were regarding tread on either of my services and on my last one they was just about ready to be changed, so i presume they didn't check them Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

My dealer did record the depth of tread at the 15k service. 6mm on both rear tyres, and 5mm on both front tyres. However, there was no comment on whether the tyre wear was even accross the width of each tyre. GS TD4 All Black

Is there a common problem with uneven tyre wear? I just checked my front tyres and they are starting to show more wear on the outer inch of each tyre. I have only done 7000 miles. Do I need to get the tracking checked?

I always keep a regular check on my tyres. My car has done 14,000 now and the fronts are both on 5 mm and the rears on 6mm. They seem to be even wear accross the tyre. That's how it should be. This is the first car I've had where they have worn evenly however!! Any uneven wear suggests either lack of balancing, worn suspension bushes or incorrect castor / camber / tracking. With regard to the inital comments on here, I would say you have a good case not to pay anything towards the alterations and the new tyres, as the dealer did not pick up on the fault during the 15k service - good luck and keep us posted. Gone - TD4 XS Auto, Sumatra Black, Mud flaps and side strips, clear indicators, private plate, privacy glass

Flycop2000 - yes is sounds as if you need the tracking checked; wear on the outside edges suggests excessive "toe-in". You and the rest of this thread have highlighted that tread should be checked across the tyre and in several places round it to get a picture of any uneven wear.

All - I think the dealer can ask for a contribution to new tyres because you are expecting new tyres when the old ones were part worn. Agreed that excessive wear could be a result of a factory problem but some natural wear would have occoured. NB Finding with the tracking out is not regarded as a factory problem as you could have put the adjustment out by hitting kerbs, logs, rocks or other obstructions. Gone... 2013 XS TD4 Manual Firenze Red
