Vibration from rear like in too high a gear.

Hey - that Rhymes Very Happy

I've done a bit of searching around and can't seem to see anyone having this issue.

When going along at anything over 35-40 mph - 60-75 kph - i get a rumble / vibration from the rear of the car. It's like if you are in a manual and you select 5th at 20mph.

I have some tyre noise currently due to All terrain tyres fitted, but this is definitely transmission related - not diff as its a straight line issue

Anyone out there experienced the same? Have a resolution?

i see you have an auto

I found in both my 2010MY and my current 2013MY that when cruising at 70mph it would vibrate as if in too high a gear for the speed. Revs are around 1800rpm at that speed.
I find that by just increasing the speed slight by no more than 5mph puts the revs/speed into the right zone and the vibrations go away.
Or alternatively drop the speed a little to force a change down from 6th gear. (or do it manually)

Im not sure if this a common symptom, but to me it seems as though the gearing is not quite right at 70 mph, hence increasing or decreasing the revs marginally stops the vibrations

Thanks RogB - glad I'm not alone

I think there should be some way of getting the ECU to map the gear changes differently. - perhaps it's done for fuel efficiency, but I get rattles as a result and have to make sure everything in the back is fastened down or I have a right din going on.

I thought for a while that the prop shaft was causing it, or some bearing, but it's only at higher speeds as you point out and can be eliminated almost completely by driving in manual mode - only using 6th after 75 mph.

Think the next step is to upgrade the Audio to drown it out Very Happy 2009 Freelander 2 TD4SE Auto Silver

Nice. Did that come with a speaker upgrade too?

I'm getting the local Independent LR shop to investigate the main drive shaft and rear end to see if anything worn. After that it's just quieter tyres and drive in semi-auto.

Considering a move up to a Disco soon anyway, so may be academic. Smile 2009 Freelander 2 TD4SE Auto Silver
