if it is a high pitch noise (and stops with a "clack" type sound), its the EGR valve and is nothing to worry about.

If it's at the front of the engine I would say it's more likely to be the throttle body. |

Yeah, sounds like the throttle body gears have stripped. Fairly common fault. I had one go on mine once, also just before I was going away for a week in it. Bought the throttle body but didn't have time to fit it so took it away with me in case it gave me problems. No problem driving the car and I eventually got round to fitting it on some time after we got back from holiday. Do a search on throttle body on this site. Plenty of info. About £100 to buy and an hours labour to fit. If you are a halfway competent diyer it's a fairly straightforward job to do. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
