hi all - new to the world of Landrover & wanted to know if any members had been to Yarwell Pay & Play and whether it's a good starting point for a total offroad novice?

So yes I'd say it's a good place to have a go. As with any similar site, you will have to pick and choose your routes according to your vehicles capability and the level of risk of damage you are comfortable with.
