Window tint

Hi,

I recently purchased a Sd4 HSE and am really happy with it. However, i couldn't find one with the factory tinted rear windows. So I'm going to get them done by a local tint company.
The reason I want them is to prevent sun glare and uv for my little boy when he's in the car.
So has anyone does this for the same reasons? If so, what tint % did you go for?
(I done a quick forum search and can see this has been discussed a few times, but couldn't see anything about tinting for the kids in the back).

Thanks,

Koggy.

I think 75% tint is the standard LR factory darkness.

Wasn't aware that having tints done would have to be declared to the insurance company so long as they didn't go beyond the factory spec ???

better safe than sorry I guess given the way insurance companies are these days though

I knew aftermarket tints where an additional on the insurance, but when I changed the policy over to the Freelander and informed them it was factory tint they still charged me, Censored that is with LV insurance too

Thanks Dave. Might be worth me looking at those. Seem quite cheap compared to tints.
However, I do like the look of the tints and I guess that would be nearer to the look of the car from the factory with tints.

I didn't know that I'd have to tell my insurance about aftermarket window tints either Shocked
Would insurance companies really have on record if the car comes out the factory with or without tint?

highly unlikely unless they had access to Topix (in the case of LR)

tints make a car more desirable to break into apparently, regardless of the fact that they shield the contents from view in the first place.

if an insurance company Is loading the policy for tints or refusing to pay out because of them, its clearly another money making scam.

but plenty of insurers wont/don't care about minor mods like that, just the performance enhancing mods etc.

I think what insurance companies are trying to avoid is tinted front side windows and windscreen which of course doesn't apply in this case. 1982 RR Classic-converted to 200TDi-gone

no decent aftermarket tinter would do the front windows illegally anyway unless on a show car. You can go to a certain very low tint level on the front but not sure what the % is.

I always used to think that a 75% tint was 3/4 of the way to a total Limo style black out, but its actually the % of light the windows allow through, rather than block. You can legally go as dark as you want from B pillar backwards.

Sure, I only want from the B pillar back to be tinted and I'd like it to look as close as factory tint as possible. Not sure what % that would be, perhaps medium smoke?

Factory tint is dyed glass. Aftermarket tint is film. So it'd be pretty easy to tell. There's no way I'd not declare a mod like that. Any insurance company worth their salt would say you pulled out on that tractor because the tints hindered your vision! Rolling Eyes

Mine are dark smoke, which I believe was around a 75% tint. Or was it 78%? Can't recall. But it's distinctly lighter than a factory tint when I park next to one. I'd probably go for limo black (which is the next and final stage up) if I were doing it again.

I assume you know it will never look as good as a factory tint - the silver outline effect round the dot matrix is quite distinct on FL2's, as are the heated screen lines. Some cars hide it better than others!

Sure I agree that aftermarket tinting will not look as good as factory tint, but it's will look more alike than blinds.

On the insurance side of things, I have no problem declaring any modification that I've made and paying any additional premium. I just wasn't aware that if i got the windows tinted on the rear windows only, the same as from the factory cars, that the insurance would want to know about it. That would mean that car records from manufacturers would state if the car came out the factory with tinted windows or not.
Surely not.
