Most likely to be corrosion in the handle switch. I had this problem recently and was going to replace the switch which is around £30, but wanted to try a a temp fix as there was nothing to loose. I peeled the rubber switch cover in the handle back, cleaned the corrosion deposits up the best I could, then squirted in a load of maintenance spray and reseated the rubber cover. A month later and it's still working fine.

I did wonder that, but seems odd that locking the car solves it, but I'm not an electrician, so maybe...

My wife has a 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 which has been a trouble free car since we purchased it. However it has suddenly developed a mysterious Tailgate problem where it suddenly decides to unlock itself when the ignition is turned off. Has anybody experienced this problem before and found out the cause ??

RogB, problem appears to have gone for the moment so is intermittent and must be the switch, will definitely replace to avoid future recurrence

Hi there, guy on ebay sells a repair Boot Switch kit for around £17. Just the switch with two wires protruding. No seed to take panel off just firk the old switch out with screwdriver, cut the two wires, reconnect and push switch back in, five mins job done. Works fine on mine.

Useful cost effective tip, since the plastic spring clips for the switch unit are accessed from inside the tailgate light housing, was it easy to lever out the switch unit without damaging the housing

Switch came complete with housing & rubbers attached, I just flirted it out by knocking a screwdriver into the switch assembly. Doesn't matter if u damage it cos it's scrap anyway, join the wires and it just pushes back in. Mine is a 2008 freelander 2. Dunno if they've changed em. Search ebay for boot switch repair kit for freelander 2. Suggest you buy the switch first then u can see what you get. Saves loads of hassle.

I've read many posts on this issue and finally plucked up courage, purchased the switch and set about replacing it this weekend. Of course the plan didn't survive the first point of contact. I cannot remove 2 of the six tailgate housing unit bolts! The problem is the studs mounted to the rear of the tailgate housing unit turn with the bolt so whatever the stud is fixed to, no longer holds it in one position. Of course, anyone who has worked in this area will know the bolts are difficult to access.

Anyone encountered this and can anyone advise on how to remove the unit. As a desperate measure I have considered sacrificing the mounded plastic unit by drilling through it to allow me to get to the back of the studs to cut them out. going in through the housing
