I think access to a press is useful, but of course necessity is the mother of invention.

Easy. If you anticipate finding yourself in that situation you get rid of the modern, all-electronic, non-maintainable high-tech 4x4 and buy a suitable Toyota or Nissan. In countries with such environments you'll still find old-school options with leaf springs, live axles, proper differentials, etc, which can reasonably be maintained in the bush. I recently read an article in an Australian 4x4 magazine about someone with a Discovery 4 who ended up with a bill for many thousands when his car had one or more ECUs fried in a failed jump start attempt. He had to be recovered back to civilisation (not, you understand, that the outback is not civilised!) at great expense on the back of a truck as the local garages could do nothing with it. KISS is a philosophy motor manufacturers would do well to re-acquaint themselves with. |
