United States 2009 LR2 i6 HSE Auto Stornoway Grey
Power Transfer Unit / Rear Differential just replaced

Posting as an FYI as others may find this useful. We live in the USA, originally in New Jersey and now in North Carolina (although I am a Brit!)

Our 2009 LR2 / Freelander 2 HSE with 68,000 miles started to have a noticeably loud whining sound when driving. Our extended warranty was due to expire and we had a service coming up so we took the LR2 to a LR dealer in North Carolina for a service. Based on other posts on this forum and elsewhere I assumed it was the rear differential.

They identified the Power Transfer Unit had a failed bearing and needed to be replaced. Luckily the extended warranty covered the majority of the bill. The breakdown on the invoice following the work has:

7787 Replace Power Transfer Unit (7787 CRRW) :$569.90
LR066503 Power Transfer U :$1629.00
LR003137 Oil - Transmission x 2 :$116.90
LR001816 Gasket Catalys :$2.96
FX108046 Nut - Locking x 6 :$3.66
LR000957 Gasket Catalys :$169.48
LR005738 Bolt x 8 :$30.88
TOTAL: $2522.78

The above is the actual net price. The list price is also on the invoice and would have been $3190.63

thanks

Alex
