Have you tried greasing the ball as it looks very dry?

Thanks Richp but with the stabaliser I have, it would contaminate the friction pads, It will probably turn out to something I am doing it usaully does.

the ball looks like any other LR detachable towball i have seen

unless its not correct in size, i still think it could be the hitch at fault (but that doesn't explain the other hitch not working)

if you are not seeing the green locking indicators that could be worn hitch pads, according to the alko documents i posted earlier Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Mr Pinks
I can see the green of the hitch indicator but it does not pop up fully, as it did on my fixed toe bar on my old Freelander 1. So may be the problem is with the pads although I could not feel any damage but it has been over 12 months since it was used and they may have warped.

All tow balls in this country should be the same size - 50 mm - unless they are extremely old.

The most likely scenario is that you haven't released the catch on the coupling properly. Usually the handle needs to be near vertical before you drop it onto the ball. If it isn't, then you probably haven't released the catch properly.

Thanks to all your replies I will take onboard what you have said and probably get a caravan fitter out to see if he can come up with a possible solution.

That's a very big no for an Alko stabiliser hitch. The ball should be clean and dry, paint and grease free. Greasing the ball would render the stabiliser useless.

I have now replaced my caravan and the towbar fits ok with no problems so it must have been a problem with both my Alko stabiliser and the one we tried at Stuart Longtons of Chorley. Just got back from Betws Y Coed and towed the new van with no problems apart from the detachable tow bar has now got a looseness not major, but not a solid connection to the vehicle. The indicator is showing connected ok. Freelander 2 TD4 GS 2011 Manual Satorini Black (Current)

It has to be a one in a zillion chance that the two Al-Ko hitches, yours and a randomly selected other, demonstrated the same problem but glad you now have it sorted.
