nothing it was fit for off roading in standard form

I added side protection tubes for looks and they also save the door sills too, (though i touched ground and those without didn't when we went to Tong last )

I've not green laned yet, but Tow Strop, Shovel and another car to come along would be on my short list and possible MTR on a second set of wheels if your heading to the more extreme route  Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Second that, tow strop, shovel and another car is always helpful.

There is a company selling a lift kit, and you can get the Mantec under body protection.

I guess it depends how much you want to offroad, and more importantly, how extreme you intend to go, and more importantl, how much spare cash you have.

when i went to a offroad day in mine, i found it very capable, Since i was on normal road tyres, i kept to the basic easy routes, but going through a red route in the mud, no problems there either

Rich has had his on green lanes with no problems, apart from a little hole he came across for a hour or two shoveling practice

Your right have used mine a bit, and hopefully I'll be able to post some pics from the LRO show on Saturday, from the offroad route.

If you do some searches on here, there's been a few threads about lift kits, offroading etc.

Don't worry Monty, it was an FL1 that got stuck not my FL2

It looks like it's been dropped from about 20,000 feet

There's more pics in my gallery, apparantly the local council have now filled it in, so the route is drivable again.

It covered the front wheel, and did take us 2 hours to dig and tow it out. It looked impressive going in as the rear wheel went about 3 ft in the air.

The best bit was that after we'd seen it going in, I got out to see about getting through, so I stood on teh bank and told my brother "Just go for it, you'll get out the other side", but the more he went the deaper the front went, then the back wheels dropped in and wedged the car in place, oops.

Thanks for your inputs. Im looking now into buying a Fr ee 2 with the whole Matzkerkit. The german offroad magazin featuring the Matzker Free 2 http://www.off-road.de/home/modules/news/a...ryid=1664. Cant unfortunatly scan the pics. The car looks really good. r/f is 255mm/260mm, middel 290mm. Matzker also wants to improve the gearbox, so you want go up into smoke.
Found on youtube some good stuff with the Free 2 offroading.

Wow, I have just done the offroad course at the LRO show, and it has re awaken me to how good the FL2 is offroad.

I was being followed and following many Defenders and I was expecting to be pulled away to the "Easy" route, nope, they didn't have an easy route, just the same route as everyone else. The first hill scared me, whilst I worked out how to control a manual on the downhill, and getting it slow enough, it's definatly different to driving the auto offroad, when I also had an instructor sat next to me at the LRE centre.

Once I'd got my head in gear for very, VERY steep hills, I was doing much better. I only stalled twice, which for the size and steepness of hills I was quite impressed with. Other than that, it performed impeccably, made every obstacle asked of it, following and being followed by lots of defenders, I never felt out of place, I just kept being suprised watching the Defender in front tackle things thinking, no chance, not a hope, it won't get up there, or through that, but it did.

I had one scary moment, and a very steep down hill, where the road tyres were beaten by gravity and slippy mud, and the hill descent couldn't slow the car down as much as normal, so we got to the bottom going farliy quickly, some all terrain tyres, and it would have been a lot smoother, and safer, thankfully it wasn't too long a hill, but it did have a couple of pot holes at the bottom for that added bump as we hit them. The guy the defender in front gave me the thumbs up at one point, and smiled as we managed to follow him through everything he could do.

Wading through water that very nearly covered the wheels was definately fun, and I wanted another go at that.

What I would say to anyone considering buying an FL2 who wants to offroad it is, buy an automatic, definately, I'm not going to question it again, I will be buying an automatic next time. Don't get me wrong, the manual worked, and for greenlaning (not many short v.steep hills, and not massivly technical) it works great. But after about 20 minutes in, the clutch started to smell, and the only way to control the car over the difficult technical terrain was to slip the clutch, and you can't do that for long. I wouldn't want to do a days offroading over difficult terrain, even half a days would give your clutch some serious abuse. I know autos aren't perfect, and you can still cook the tourqe convertor, but it would take a lot more abuse. Whilst I was enjoying the smell of burning clutch I did wonder if anyone could make some kind of device to allow you to get low range on a Freelander, that would make it perfect then.

Can't wait for my next offroading trip now. May have to go to tixover quarry soon, and have a play. Just need to get some AT tyres now.

So whats the Freelander like in Soft Sand?

Thsi weekend i went out for some 4WDin with my mate in his Nissan Narva and it was awesome, however a few times we needed to use the low torque gears.

Would the Freelander cope with this, as it does have this option?
