Question - Part Used Spares

All,
I was once told by a tyre fitter many years ago that it’s dangerous to permanently refit to the car, a part worn spare tyre (wheel) that has been in the boot for a length of time (say a year) and has been previously used on the car. He told me that the rubber goes hard once it’s been used and stored with no weight on and can ultimately fail.
Anyone come across this? Gone:

I suppose it might have been true many many years ago, but I doubt that it's an issue now. If it is true then those of us who use different winter and summer sets would seem to be in a lot of trouble...!

That said, storing tyres in direct sunlight isn't to be recommended.

To a very small degree he is correct!
Tyres degrade but not after 1 year!
It's more of a problem for vehicles which store their spare on the rear and subject to the elements.
Anything around 5 to 10 years it would be advisable to inspect the spare. Rubber compounds do degrade and harden over these extended periods, even more so if exposed on the rear of the vehicle. MY15

Tyre fitters are not the brightest of folk. The lady next door took her VW to get new tyres yesterday and the guy said that he couldn't find the locking wheel nut key, she showed him what she thought was the key and he said no that won't fit so she went away. She asked me to have a look and sure enough it was the right key, it's just that the wheel nuts had plastic covers on which the numpty hadn't thought to remove! Shocked 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Similar thing happened to a relative with his Ford Focus.
The fitter tried putting the wheel brace over the plastic nut.
"Sorry mate it wont fit you must have odd size nuts was the reply".
Even so they still made a mess of the plastic covers. Gone:
