OK I was being polite earlier - I know as a fact that modern cars use NO fuel when coasting in gear.

Taken from the Top Gear web site;

The simple fact of the matter is this; To save fuel, all you need to do is think ahead. Way, way ahead.

If you see the lights ahead are red, take your foot off the throttle immediately. If you wait and then use your brakes you are simply wasting the fuel you used to achieve a speed you didn't need. Remember, a modern engine uses no fuel at all when it is coasting in gear.

I agree with Avtur - don't coast in neutral because when the throttle is closed and the engine is above idle or maybe 1200 (i.e. on the overrun or engine braking) no fuel is being used at all. This is in addition to the stability benfits you get and the option to drive out of trouble if it appears.

For the same reason, if you want max economy, when you approach a change in road conditions, it is better to get off the throttle completely and then squeeze a bit back on later than to just ease the throttle and keep some torque flowing. No throttle means no fuel used and if road speed is high that's infinite miles per gallon.

I posted in the "Unbeleivebale fuel consumption" post today beciase I got 48.2 MPG going from Birmingham (2.2 miles on local roads) then cold start and onto A38M, M6 M1 to Milton Keynes, day's work then cold start, local roads, M1, M18, A1 to Wetherby exit. 48.2 dropped to 48.0 by the time I had done 12 miles on local roads to my house from the A1 but still impressive. Average for 4400 miles is 41.8 according to the trip and 40.04 calulating fuel added divided by miles covered frmo tank fill to tank fill.

I do admit to ignoring the 60ml of Millers Diesel Power Plus that I put into every 60L of fuel.
