mud and ruts towing a trailer

was towing my horse box today and was wondering if the mud and ruts setting would work while towing a trailer.
Question
what i mean is would it be able to get me up a hill whilst towing the trailer in first gear without putting foot on gas pedal - all subject to traction of course! 07 Fl2 GS

I presume your referring to the anti stall side of the car

I don't think it would work due to the extra weight the horse box adds Thumbs Up Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

If you put the car into first gear and get it moving slowly , take foot of the pedles and it will creep forward, even when you come to a hill, similar to what a automatic gear box does, Thumbs Up Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

yup thats what i was referring to! Thumbs Up

thats what i originally thought, but surely the weight shifts in relation to the incline of the hill (i.e. the steeper the hill, the more strain on the engine) so what i was wondering was is there a limit on this? surely there must be.

ahhh feck it, i'll just try it and stop talking about it! Very Happy

I imagine there would not be enough torque at that low 'crawl' speed to get it up the hill with that sort of weight behind. You would need at least 1500rpm where the torque is amost at peak. ______________________________

With the car solo (manual transmission) I've been surprised at the gradient the car will climb using anti-stall. After a trip to B&Q I had the car loaded with about 600kgs of building materials and had a play on a nearby cobbled street running close to 1:4, car climbed it quite happily.

Have also had a play while towing the 'van (just over 1400 kgs) and again been surprised by results, though haven't tried on roads where the gradient was signed.

So give it a go, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I'm not sure if the anti-stall programing is modified by any of the terrain response settings, the comments above relate to normal road setting.

When I went for a half day at Land Rover Experience recently (the LR free offer, first 100 people to apply each month!), the tutor encouraged Mrs B to drive FL2 off from a standstill on a level road and go up through gears 1 to 5 without touching the throttle pedal. You have to be easy on the clutch and let the engine reach stable idle speed in each gear before changing up... but it does work. It actaully ran OK at idel in 6th on a slight down-slope.

Having said that, using this anti-stall feature has its limits and I suspect that a trailer and an up-slope could be a bit too much to ask.
