I thought the standard size was 235/65/17 - in which case if you go 245 you may need to drop to 60 profile to keep the overall diameter unchanged. 07 Freelander 2 TD4SE Tambora Flame, side steps, privacy glass, mud flaps, boot liner and a tow bar. Ok it's the Wifes but she lets me drive it occasionally - if I've been good! |

I thought 245 was the width of the tyre?

The 70/65/45 etc profile figure is calculated as a percentage of the width - hence a 245/70/17 has a bigger sidewall than a 235/70/17 - 7mm t bigger to be precise (10mmx 70%). That said, 7mm is the difference between a new and old tyre so its minimal in effect, just depends on how tight the clearances are. 07 Freelander 2 TD4SE Tambora Flame, side steps, privacy glass, mud flaps, boot liner and a tow bar. There are sites online where you put in your current tyre size, and new tyre size, and it tells you the difference in rolling size/diameter etc.

Forgot to say, with regards to what they're like, the best advice I can find so far is that most AT tyres will be good on road, not brilliant, but good enough. MT/Rs are usually a bit more of a compromise. Having said that I've read somewhere that the Goodyears are more road biased than the BFGoodrich MTRs.

Great, I didn't know they made them in 235/65R17. I currently have 235/60R18 on my LR2, but I really wanted teh Goodyear MT/R's so I don't mind going down a rim size since I will be getting winter rims anyway.
