Battery Trickle Charging whilst left connected?

Battery Charging.

Ive read the manual and it specifically states that you must disconnect the battery before charging it.

Now when my car isnt being used say for a couple of weeks I put on a trickle charger just to keep the battery fully topped up, I use the type that can be left connected and it will keep the battery fully charged and also exercise it too.
It only charges at maximum of 2 amps.

Does anyone use this type of charger on a FL2 without disconnecting the battery? so preventing the need to reset things after reconnection, mines a 2014 model by the way.

My New MINI which I also do this method of charging on without disconnection has no problems at all and the manual does say its ok to do provided the charger doesnt input more than around 2amp slow charge, more than this and damage to the electronic can occur.

I am assuming the FL will be the same with no problem at such a slow low amp charge being left connected up, and when they refer to must be disconnected they mean for fast/rapid high amp chargers it has to be disconnected.

So I thought I would ask if anyone does this without problems?

I have never disconnected a battery to charge it. Did you know that if your car has a stop/start facility you should not use an ordinary charger but a CTEK type as the battery used is designed for stop/start vehicles

Also Lidl sometimes have a charger about £15 some say it's the same as Ctec and may even be made by them.

Thanks for the reply, yes mine is a smart charger so is probably ok then, as said I use it on the MINI with a stop start system and it doesnt affect anything.
Ive not looked at the battery yet, but the BMWs as far as I know have gel batteries when stop start is fitted, so I was told some time back, dont know if LR do yet?

FL2 stop/start cars go one better than BMW and 'Gel', the next progressive step forward was 'AGM' batteries which it uses.
Although mine is the standard battery I have used a CTEK for a few years now on my car through the 13 pin towing socket without disconnecting and its fine, for best results your Smart charger should have an 'AGM' setting as it needs a higher voltage.

Oki thanks Thumbs Up

ive got a smart charger and its does AGM batteries so it says, and you can leave it connected so it maintains the battery at full health, looks like its ok then. Razz

unless your going away for a extended period why bother charging? if your batteries on the way out just buy a new battery a lot time effective and reliable than repeatedly charging a battery. At work

Or buy a multimeter preferably an analogue one then you can see exactly how the voltage is varying with engine speed. You can also use it for other jobs.

Something like this for £10 www.maplin.co.uk/p/mt-2017-large-analogue-multimeter-n60lk 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

Fl2, I've used a charger whilst the battery was connected. No problem.
Battery was discharging when leaving the car unlocked
