'Holding the line' phone con | |
...
More in today's paper about conmen posing as plod, phoning people to tell them that their credit cards have been cloned etc and directing the cardholder to hand over PINs, security codes, move money to different accounts etc etc and the advice is that these callers may be hanging onto the line so that, if / when you hang up yourself & then call to check the veracity of the original 'police' caller, you just re-establish contact with the conman who has held the line open.
BT seem to be slow at implementing a faster disconnect (from the current 5-6 mins?) so I can't think why the best advice if in receipt of one of these suspicious calls is to simply hang up, then immediately dial ANY OTHER number. Imagine. You hang up, call your mate Fred and, when your call is answered, you say "Hello is that the Merseyside Police?". If the answerer says "You daft sod, what the f ck are you talking about?" you know the line has beeen cleared. If the answer comes: "Yes sir how can I help you?" you know you are being scammed. Simples.
