Gradient Release Control (GRC) - Does yours work?

Hi,

Picked up my Freelander 2 today so have been having abit of a play.

Can't seem to get the GRC to work?? Have activated HDC and driven to a slope and stopped using footbrake, then released the footbrake and the car starts rolling like any other car??

I have a TD4 Manual, anyone have any experience of this GRC??

I pressed the button by mistake and it certainly slowed me down from about 10 mph to around 5mph.

What you are referring to is the HDC (Hill Desent Control).

The GRC (Gradient Release Control) is supposed to stopped the car from gaining speed rapidly when the footbrake is released whilst on a slope. According to the manual it keeps the brakes applied and releases them gradually to allow the vehicle to start moving smoothly???

My model is a TD4 Manual GS if anyone else can offer any advice.

Just to clarify, GRC is built into HDC so there is no driver intervention required to switch GRC on. Can someone please see if GRC works on their car, by having HDC active, stopping on a slope with the footbrake and then releasing the footbrake and seeing if the car starts to move off or if it holds itself on the brakes???

Have a go see if it works and post a reply on here.

Yes I 'm struggling to get to grips with this. So far all I manage to do is stall the engine. I've found that if you release the clutch slightly there is a difference, but this is more like clutch control. I'm going on a half day off road session in a few weeks time so hopefully I should get some instruction.

Sounds like a complicated alternative to the traditional method of hill starting - namely hold it on the handbrake until the clutch bites, but with all four wheel brakes doing the holding.
Now, off to find a hill to try it out!! Don`t drive faster than your angel can fly!

I used the GRC on my half day taster and I can confirm that it does work very well. As did an inadvertant reverse hill descent Embarassed

Hi, thanks for the replies,

I went to a steep hill, activated HDC and stopped on the steep slope using footbrake, released footbrake to being building revs but just rolled backwards???

Boiledgnat- Can you advise us how you used GRC on your hlaf day tester and what the effects were like please.

Hi.

The vehicle has to be above a certain angle for it to work. I'm not sure what this is though. I managed to stall half way up a steep hill (and it was noticably steep!). After restarting, I was able to take my foot off the brake and move it over to the accelerator to catch the biting point without having to use the handbrake. I think it just holds the brakes on for a few seconds - nothing any different to what you would normally do on a slight incline, but I would normally have used the handbrake on such a steep hill.

We were in the muddy ruts setting on the terrain response, so I don't know if this switches it on or not?

I'll try it this evening - gives me an excuse to go for a spin !!

It all sounds rather similar to the EPB on D3/FFRRand RRSport................... Can you engage the GC at speed though?
With the D3/RRS and FFRR if your brakes fail then you can pull up the EPB and it will engage the ABS and bring you to a safe stop - it is VERY spectacular to actually do it too - I tried it on a quiet bit of the A9 on my LRE day at Dunkeld, from 50mph. Glad it was their car and not mine too! How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

As far as I know (ref. LRO magazine - April issue) the vehicle has to be at an 18 degrees slope or more for GRC to work.

18 degress isnt really all that steep, so if you have HDC activated all the time, at least round city driving so it doesnt deactivate above 50 mph it should work with most hill starts. Can anyone clarify yet if you have to have a certain Terrain Response program selected or does it work on the normal road setting??

I tried mine coming down the multi-storey car park! Seemed to work well and was activated on the level. Jonathan

Still not working for me, I have tried all of the Terrain Response settings whilst the HDC is activated but still no sign of the GRC working!!!

For those of you that it works for can you tell me if you have an Auto or Manual???
