Marty McFly roof lights

Ok, I know it's 1980's cheesy, but I'm thinking of fitting 4 spot lights on my roof. Like Marty McFly's pickup in Back to the Future.

I have bought some genuine roof crossbars and am thinking of drilling them and mounting four 8" wipac "4x4" round spots.

The reason for this is I am finding the lights just too dim for the dark wet country lanes I have to drive down. I have fitted Halfords Extreme Brilliance (120% brighter) 55W H7s to both dip and main but it still isn't as bright as my old Volvo V50 which had factory fitted 100W mains.

Anyone fitted roof lights? If so, how did you route the wiring?

Or fitted 100W mains? (I've heard the relay and wiring will take the current, but the heat may be an issue)

Scott

Mind you, roof lights can look pretty naff on a car like the Freeander unless you go the whole hog and fit a G4-style roofrack. And paint your car orange...

It was actually the G4 which gave me the idea. I love how that one looks, although I don't think my Mrs would let me paint ours orange. Any idea where one can buy a roof rack like that?

Unfortunately not. I seem to recall the question being asked in the past, and I think the answer was to the effect that the G4 racks are not available and no one seemed to know of suitable alternatives. Which isn't to say there aren't any. But you're right - the G4 looks pretty good, even if losing some of the subtlety of the FL2 Smile

You could just buy a Discovery instead - even available in orange! Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

I had 4 roof fights on a defender back in the day. They weren't really that good to be honest, admittedly they were cheapo ring ones, but they just didn't throw the light as well as you think they would. Also will realistically knock 2 to 3 mpg off economy.

Wat is it that you are trying to improve? Short distance, middle distance or long distance?

100w mains bulbs would be illegal and not a factory fit... 55w is the limit per filament/bulb as I understand.

I'm considering Hid conversion for the full beam, should see a notable difference without affecting the look, and perhaps fitting hid to the fog lights and re wiring them to come on with the full beam too.

Works well. The cable is drawn under the rubber moulding on the windscreen.

How did you sort the power torssell? Any pics of the cabling? I really like the look of that, specially for the winter months, I suppose with the right connections this could be plugged in and out easily.

I believe Mantec were commissioned to design and build the FL2 G4 roof load rack and rear ladder steps. Contact Mantec, they may still have some stock or, will make one up for you Idea

Trade the Mrs in, paint the car orange you know it makes sense.
I have been told that the G4 roof rack stops you from opening the sun roof, that's why my Mrs had a fit when I suggested it, that and the fact that I had just bought and fitted roof rails from the dealership.

Still waiting for a genuine G4 roof rack to turn up at a price that I can afford, they come up on eBay from time to time usually around £400. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
