The soft oil deal when new hardens with age and cuts a fine polished groove in the crankshaft thus reducing the diameter. An identical new seal won't last very long. The proper answer is fit a new crankshaft which of course is crazy.

On many cars that are well designed the seals run on a separate spacer/sleeve thats pressed in place and can easily be replaced when fitting a new seal so it runs on the correct unworn diameter again. |

Hi, may I suggest there is little point in fitting a new seal if you havnt sorted the problem of why other seals have failed.

If there is a spring inside the seal lip, you can remove it, unscrew one end from the other (the spring narrows down at one end and 'screws' into the standard size end), remove 5-10 mm from the STANDARD end of the spring and reconnect it. That will tighten the seal. |

Intriguing the method of shrinking the fit of the seal ! I would still go for ensuring the new seal rides on unused steel.
