2007 Freelander 2 with 115000 miles and a new crankshaft oil seal fitted.
Add in a fly wheel and a clutch makes this a costly repair but it should now last another 100K miles. Now on 3rd seal and Landrover cant supply these any more. They are on Back Order !!!

Anyone out there experiencing of have any knowledge that can help ????

The soft oil deal when new hardens with age and cuts a fine polished groove in the crankshaft thus reducing the diameter. An identical new seal won't last very long. The proper answer is fit a new crankshaft which of course is crazy.

The seal will 99% be a standard catalogue item with specific metric dimensions.

Buy a new LR seal then go to a bearings stockists and ask his advice. Your LR seal may be a single lip and your bearing supplier may be able to locate another seal with twin lips that would have the lips working on an unused piece of crank.
Sometimes the original seal is thick and you may be able to buy two thinner seals to fit the same gap, here again the seal lips will run on an unused portion of crank.

If this fails you may be able to use the LR seal but not press it home fully in its seating, again to make the seal lip run on fresh steel.

Landrover apparently have a dispute with the seal supplier but have managed to find one on a shelf somewhere.

It'll be interesting to see if they recommend changing the shafts as well as the seal. 3rd time lucky I guess.

Hi, may I suggest there is little point in fitting a new seal if you havnt sorted the problem of why other seals have failed.
Its a big job to either remove the engine or alternatively to remove the gearbox to get at the seal. The cost of the seal is only the tip of the iceberg relative to costs. Are you paying a garage to do the work??

If there is a spring inside the seal lip, you can remove it, unscrew one end from the other (the spring narrows down at one end and 'screws' into the standard size end), remove 5-10 mm from the STANDARD end of the spring and reconnect it. That will tighten the seal.

Try it on the old seal first to work out how much to remove! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Intriguing the method of shrinking the fit of the seal ! I would still go for ensuring the new seal rides on unused steel.

Are you doing the job yourself? If so have you read my post on engine removal? It works for the auto so it would be good to know if it works on the manual box cars as well. I've probably still got my steels braces and sump skid plate.

had crankshaft seal replaced with genuine landrover part when having dmf done .seal leaked garage replaced with Peugeot seal now not leaking

Could you please post the Peugeot crank seal's part number used on your engine?

hi alex,sorry do not have the part number it was sourced and fitted by locl indie.but will try find out next week.i do know that gsf car parts supply a crankshaft seal for the freelander 2.was told the freelander engine in mine was a Peugeot.
