2011 Freelander 2 TD4 S Manual Lago Grey
Winter tyre pressures

Taking the plunge and getting Vredestein Wintrac Extreme 4 boots fitted shortly. Awaiting prices from three suppliers. One thing that concerns me is the large discrepancies between recommended pressures, from bog standard LR spec 2.2 bar (32psi) to 2.8 bar (40psi). Can anyone confirm what the correct recommendation should be?

I run 19" Vredestein winters at 40psi as recommended by Andy at AJS tyres. Summers are 39psi, and I've had no problems, even running all year round.

I replaced my well worn and squealing Scorpions with 18" Wintrac 4 Xtreme's 3 weeks ago. The indy tyre depot put 35 psi in each and they didn't feel right, rolling slightly around corners. I've increased that to 38 psi and it's a lot better.
Vredestien themselves recommend 2.9 Bar (42 psi) and I think I'll be following their recommendation as the sidewalls on the wintrac 4's are extremely thin when compared to the Pirreli's and my previous Wrangler AT/SA's.

Thanks folks, thought 40psi might be a bit bouncy and end up with excessive wear around the centre of the tread.

I emailed Continental last week about this and they replied as follows: "Thank you for contacting us. With regards to your query I can advise you the tyre pressures in your winter tyres are to be set the same as the normal vehicle recommendations for your summer tyres."

This query relates to the tyres on my Fiesta rather than an FL2 but can't see the advice being any different. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Thanks Doc, reinforces my point about the wide range of advice!! Did a Google search for Vredestein tyre pressures and found this reply on another forum. Doesn't give you too much confidence in their reasoning. Seems they are assuming everyone is a moron and does not regularly check their tyre pressures! Sure it doesn't apply to the members of this forum!


'The reason why we advise a higher tyre pressure is:
The tyre pressure Vredestein advises is calculated on maximum load. It is normal for a tyre to lose a bit of pressure after a while. Our experience is that people do not regularly check their tyre pressure. Vredestein advises this higher pressure because we want to avoid too low pressure which can cause irreparable damage to the tyres, is responsible for more tyre wear, moreover it causes unnecessary fuel consumption.
With a bit extra pressure all these negative aspects will be avoided, the only thing is that the vehicle may feel less comfortable but in practice this comes out marginal.

Looks like the only solution is to inflate them to LR spec of 32psi and gradually increase them and test the results.

Ok, have had Vredesteins on for a couple of days now. Dry, multi surface roads, 4deg to 9deg, no difference in handling noticed. Seems to be smoother, quieter ride. In view of dubious quote from Vredestein above, have started out at stock 32psi. Will monitor over the next few weeks and post opinion accordingly.

Noticed today that the always helpful handbook (07 version) tells you to use the tyre manufacturers' recommended pressures for winter tyres. Sigh.
Ran my Vredesteins on 32 last year with no problem. Haven't put them back on yet as getting a new car on Monday (yippee!)

You are going to be well pleased with that!

I changed a MY10 TD4 HSE to a MY13 SD4 (XS, I think) and the new car might be three years younger but it's 10 years newer. I lost sunroof (no worries) memory seats (missed) but the gains were fantastic.. The sat nav works. The iPhone 4 works. The engine is great and the EPB a welcome return (had an 06 Disco 3)

As long as the EPB works like it should, I think it's a great improvement. Locks the car rock steady, releases automatically if your'e lazy and allows more space around the centre console between the seats Thumbs Up
