Silverstone Pirelli failures

Exciting British GP today, and the drivers skill was amazing when 4 different rear left tyres exploded yet not one hit a barrier. There was one other in qualifying making 5 rear left blow outs.
Not a great advert for Pirelli, but I don't think I'll panic about my rear left Pirelli scorpion just yet. Laughing _________________

Why Blame Pirelli? FIA wanted tyre degradation to spice things up a little, now it's all gone too far where is Ecclestone and his cronies? Gone a bit quiet haven't they, this may hurt Pirelli of course, everyone is on the blame Pirelli bandwagon when in truth they make damn good tyres.
Blame the FIA and their silly rule book if you need to blame anyone.

The tyres, from what i gather, had sidewall cuts.
It's easy to blame Pirelli, but the F1 teams appeared to think it was caused by the kerb on turn 4.
Maybe the circuit is to blame? Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

AIUI there were problems with tyre failures before Silverstone and that's partly what the 'illegal' tyre test with Mercedes was all about, although nothing had changed prior to last Sunday. Clearly something on the circuit was contributing to the failures, and the kerbs are the obvious place to look for the culprit - they had changed for this year. But having said that, Taz is absolutely right - a major factor is the current rules which were introduced to improve the 'spectacle' of F1 racing, not for any valid technical reason. The tyres are designed to degrade, and to degrade rapidly too. Pirelli may be struggling a bit to get the balance right, but they're more than capable of making a tyre which will last a race, given the opportunity to do so!

Degrading tyres, the requirement to use two different tyre compounds during a race, DRS, etc, may all increase overtaking, but for me seeing a faster car overtaken by a slower one on fresher tyres isn't racing, and spoils rather than enhances the 'spectacle'. The rules also stifle innovation and creativity - how much better would it be if we could come up with a series in which teams had a limited budget, but within that budget they could do more or less what they liked! E.g. given what's happening with diesel technology in sports car racing (the Le Mans winning Audi is a diesel) let's see the opportunity to run diesels in F1. Bring back active suspension, and moveable aerodynamic devices. Give teams a free hand, but with limited resources so they can't go silly. Sounds much more interesting to me!

Commentary I watched stated new drainage had been installed in areas prone to flooding, turn 4 being one of them, prior to the F1 weekend. They were saying maybe a drain cover was to blame???

Good piece in Guardian below:

Interesting article. I'm no engineer but as all the tyres that let go were rear lefts surely that is indicative of something track and driving line related rather than a manufacturing fault. Let's see what happens in Germany.
Personally I have fallen out of love with F1 since the refuelling rule and tyre choice was taken away. Pit drama was part of the race. Touring cars are my racing of choice now. _________________

I stopped watching F1 when they stopped overtaking,

a race was won on how fast the pit monkeys were,

why not race the pit crews? Laughing

Why can't they simplify things? Limit the engine capacity but leave everything else open. Pit stop for fuel and/or tyres if you need to but not compulsorily. A true free-for-all would be far more interesting. Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

Ah - it's all because some teams put the tyres on the wrong way round! Rolling with laughter
