Why Blame Pirelli? FIA wanted tyre degradation to spice things up a little, now it's all gone too far where is Ecclestone and his cronies? Gone a bit quiet haven't they, this may hurt Pirelli of course, everyone is on the blame Pirelli bandwagon when in truth they make damn good tyres.

The tyres, from what i gather, had sidewall cuts.

AIUI there were problems with tyre failures before Silverstone and that's partly what the 'illegal' tyre test with Mercedes was all about, although nothing had changed prior to last Sunday. Clearly something on the circuit was contributing to the failures, and the kerbs are the obvious place to look for the culprit - they had changed for this year. But having said that, Taz is absolutely right - a major factor is the current rules which were introduced to improve the 'spectacle' of F1 racing, not for any valid technical reason. The tyres are designed to degrade, and to degrade rapidly too. Pirelli may be struggling a bit to get the balance right, but they're more than capable of making a tyre which will last a race, given the opportunity to do so!

Commentary I watched stated new drainage had been installed in areas prone to flooding, turn 4 being one of them, prior to the F1 weekend. They were saying maybe a drain cover was to blame???

Interesting article. I'm no engineer but as all the tyres that let go were rear lefts surely that is indicative of something track and driving line related rather than a manufacturing fault. Let's see what happens in Germany.

Why can't they simplify things? Limit the engine capacity but leave everything else open. Pit stop for fuel and/or tyres if you need to but not compulsorily. A true free-for-all would be far more interesting. Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

Ah - it's all because some teams put the tyres on the wrong way round! |
