So in November 2011 I paid by Debit Card £211.00 to 'GoBallooning' as a birthday treat for my wife (and me)

I booked a flight for April 2012 but it got cancelled due to bad weather, then followed three more bookings and cancellations for that year, again by them due to bad weather.
My last booking was for today so last night I rang the site weather number and was told they had ceased trading on the 4th April with a view to placing the company into voluntary liquidation.

After all this time do you think I could use 'chargeback' from the debit card company or some other means of clawing it back, or do you think it best to forget it.

What you got to lose mate. Phone the debit card helpline and explain the circumstances. I know the protection safeguards are better with a credit card but you still have a chance.

Found this online regarding companies gone out of business;

If you paid by Visa or Mastercard debit card
If you made your purchase using a Visa or Mastercard debit card you may be able to claim your money back using their ChargeBack service. This is where your debit card provider reclaims the value of your purchase directly from the retailer's bank and charges it back to you.

To make a claim in this way you will need to contact your bank within 120 days or becoming aware of the issue and request that they instigate a 'chargeback' for the value of your purchase. This can be for any amount but you will need to have any details relating to your order to hand.

It is important to bear in mind that this is not a guaranteed process and you may not be able to claim your money back in this way.

Info here but if they have no money then getting it back won't be easy, I always use credit card for purchases as the consumer credit act is of use but does not apply to a debit card.

I did ring a number the Halifax gave me but I couldn't understand the Asian accent and there was a noticeable delay in the conversation because of the distance (we kept saying 'hello' about 5/6 times before silence)

After me explaining she said it was too long and over the 13 month limit, I said I'd never heard of that, she said hold the line a minute, after a mouthful of curry she then said "did you receive the goods" and I said "there was none to receive" to which she replied "how can I help you then", she could not comprehend 'a gift without receiving goods'. She kept putting me on hold for whatever reason (I'm sure she was eating something) and eventually it became too painful to bare and I gave up after that to let her finish her meal.

I have since found an address at 'Southend on Sea' for debit card disputes, so I will write to them.

Oddly Taz, I normally use my Credit card but on this occasion not, big mistake as it's nearly half the price of a Freelander service

I think that it largely depends on who your Bank/Building Society are, and their individual arrangement with Visa/MasterCard.

I recently had to chargeback a Debit Card transaction via Nationwide, and the money was back in my Flexaccount within 2 days. Foraging near Gaydon....

Get back onto the Halifax EY, and ask to speak to a supervisor straight away. Fingers crossed they will answer your query prior to curry time!

I was under the impression if the company go's into liquidation,there should be another company dealing with there assists,any money from the business is frozen untill all debits are payed, you have to put your self forward to the company dealing with it and make the claim..

Cheers for the opinions, the money spent is no big deal to me but always worth pursuing initially. I'll wait for the letter back from the 'Card Dispute' people telling me what I already know and move on.

I wouldnt hold much hope, the money you paid would probably have already been spent by the balloon company not long after you gave it to them. They probably owe alot of other companies tied into their activities money and I cannot see what assets a company like this would own (other than the balloon unless they lease it)
