Norway 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Caspian Blue
It handles well in the snow

Spent the easter-vacation at my cottage up in the mountains.

The long and steep and winding roads up there could be a challenge in the winter. But not for FL2!
It went beautifully upwards on snow and ice. No problems at all.

And we had a little snowfall:





And the sun came back:



It had snowed some 40 cm of snow.
I was curious how the FL2 would act in the snow, so I sat down in my car, started it....



Drove a little forward, and backward....



leaving a little trail in the snow where I had done my exercise....

It was no problem at all. In spite the heep of snow in front of the car, it just said: "Come on, drive on, this is no problem for me".

Well, as I actually wasn't going anywhere that day, I just parked it.

I think that wasn't bad at all. Wonder how tall the heep of snow had to be, before forcing the FL2 to give up?

So I was a little impressed.

However, I wasn't that impressed when I was to start the car again some days later. The battery was flat.
It hadn't really been that cold. Minus 15-20 at night, minus 10-12 at daytime. That shouldn't be a problem.
But I had to call Land Rover Assistance to get me started. Crying or Very sad

So if you are ever in cold weather: Start up the car every other or third day, -depending on how cold it is, and keep it running for some minutes, -enough to recharge the batteries.

But on snow & ice, the FL2 handles beautifully! Very Happy 2008 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Automatic, Caspian Blue, Alpaca, Moon roof, Exclusive pack.

Maybe it was all the short sorties driving back and forth and having fun in the snow that flattened it Laughing
However, the battery shouldn't go flat as easy as that Shocked

Great pictures by the way, mine was mainly in the lowlands this Easter Embarassed

ps - for non Scandinavian drivers, Minus 15-20 C is not uncommon in winter Norway and if all our cars flattened their batteries in these temperatures the recovery people would be millionaires Whistle 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Well, in general cold weather and batteries are not the best of friends. It is said that this happens a lot more to new cars with all the electronics, than the old ones without all the electronics.

The electronics use some power all the time, draining the battery.

The colder it is, the more the battery suffers. That is why it is important to start up the car now and then, to keep the battery (and the car as such) from freezing completely. Then there is no power left.

But I had expected the battery to be able to start. I only had it standing still in the cold for 8 days, starting it up for a few minutes in the middle of those 8 days. But next time I will start it up more often, and let the engine run for longer than a few minutes. 2008 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Automatic, Caspian Blue, Alpaca, Moon roof, Exclusive pack.

Have a look at my reply dated 6 Nov 2007 under the 'Flat Battery' heading.

It is about always setting the alarm to make the electronics go to sleep.
If the alarm is not set the electronics continue to draw one and half amps per hour.

I know what you mean about the cold weather and batteries

After a 45 minute hike up a snow covered mountain with a snowboard strapped to my back I found my freshly charged camera battery had died a shivery death Sad

So I couldn't take any pictures of me on deaths door (well laid on my back panting like i'ed done a all nighter with Jessica Alba) and some snowy scenery from a high peak in Chamonix Thumbs Up

To my disbelief the camera started working when i was in the pub Confused

Why we can make a battery that is not effected by cold weather is beyond me Mad

People have to wait to drive their lovely FL2's and I didn't get my shot that i worked so hard for:thumbsup: Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Also I've been advised not to put in gear and move the car immediately after strating the engine as the baterry loading system is not working fully in the first seconds. I've been told to wait a couple of seconds, say untill the radio/cd comes on and then put in gear.

I've just returned from skiing in Italy, where my FL2 was left outside, without starting, for 9 days. The temps were about 0 C to -10 C, so not as cold as you experienced.

However, after 9 days it started 1st time.

Maybe you could check that the alternator is working 100%.

I believe that there are "car" batteries & "marine" batteries, whereby the marine batteries can take much more punishment (eg regular complete discharge & recharge) - maybe they are more suitable for your environment ?
