I know for a fact that there are roughly 2 vehicle development jobs available to new UK engineering graduates.

Keep bombarding them - make a nuisance of yourself and eventually they will listen. No one will help you if you don't help yourself! I know how you feel, when I was starting out I'd see all these upstarts doing jobs I wanted to do but VA's right - it's a case of becoming a thorn in the recruiters' sides... be persuasive, but not aggressive and you should win out.
