England 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Auto Rimini Red

hi tomle3 we had the same problem as you. we got our 07 freelander mid november and all was ok until the cold snap we had in December. started off being difficult to start when cold then failed to start. called out Land Rover assistance who diagnosed the problem as glow plugs/relay fault. went into dealers for repair under warranty. at first i was told it may not be covered by the warranty but was repaired by them f o c. now when i start the car when really cold i get the glow plug light and the delay. i checked the warranty booklet, and under found cold start device was covered but they repaired it without any hassle in the end. hope this helps. Could you please confirm what the source of the data in that link is - I can't find that table in the parts of Topix I have. It would be good to have something with LR provenance on it to wave at the dealers if necessary!

glow plug timer and non start cold start problem

Im new to the FL club and have just done an engine change to my 2010 FL. Sunday I had it running fine on the drive, Monday I took it for its first run in my ownership and all went well. Tuesday I fitted a tow bar so didnt try the engine. Wednesday at -4 / -5 degrees it wouldnt start, tried again today after charging the battery; again whilst it coughs to try and start, it wont actually run.
Ive tried the two stage start, ie ign on and wait; then try the start. There is no delay at all; the starter goes for it immediately. With having the battery disconnected to start up has the delay timer re-set to zero?
Does anybody know how to by pass the timer to give heat to the plugs? where is the timer? there is also mention on another post about the ECU looking for a temperature signal, which sender is it and where?
There is I understand somewhere on the site where checking Glow Plugs is detailed, please can somebody guide me to where the notes are?

In my link above your post it is detailed, but one you now cannot easily seperate the glowplugs to measure and two you will need an accurate meter.

Where it says "maximum cranking times" I believe it is meant to be conveyed as "maximum delay before cranking times" Confused

Having studied this a litle bit I think the easiest way to check the glow plugs is to activate them and measure the Amps. My local LRtech mentioned values around 50 Amps if all four are OK

If the relay is not activated it might be possible to give the relay +12V at the coil??

That makes sense, the LR PDF is stating that a good 'glowplug' should measure no more than 1 ohm so each could pull a current of about 12 amps. So if you measure about 48/50 amps back at the battery JB where the relay is then all four should be good.

Mmmmmmm... Good thought, but activating then sounds like it may be tricky!

I'm not sure, but check if the relay coil is 0 volt switched by the ECU.
If so, just add a ground lead to that side of the coil. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

I also have a 07 hse and when I took the glow plugs out three of them were not working changed them and now get the delay and light and then start 07my Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Baltic Blue,Privacy Glass,Ebony black leather,Land rover detachable towbar,S/S Side bars,Climair wind deflectors,Bramble Rash,

7.5 sec's is about right, having earlier tested it down to -25. However parked over the weekend in -27 with faulty glow-plugs it was a tow-job to the dealer. 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.
Stornoway Grey with Ebony Black Pleather, Clear Indicators, Body Side Mouldings etc.
