Budget

From 2010, there will be a new higher first-year rate based on carbon dioxide
emissions, to influence purchasing choices. Specific changes include:
•• six new VED bands from 2009-10 – including a new top band (band M) for the
most polluting cars that emit more than 255g CO2 per km;
•• reducing the standard rate of VED, in 2009-10, for all new and existing cars
that emit 150g of CO2 per km or less, and increasing the standard rate of VED
on the most polluting cars to £425;
•• from 2010-11, extending the zero rate of VED, during the first year of
ownership, to all new cars that emit 130g CO2 per km or less – the EU proposed
target for average new car emissions in 2012;
•• holding the first-year rate for all new cars that emit between 131 and 160g
CO2 per km equal to the standard rate in 2010-11;
•• introducing for the most polluting cars a first-year rate of £950 in 2010-11;
and
•• providing a £15 or £20 discount for alternatively fuelled cars in 2009-10, and
£10 in 2010-11; and aligning the alternative fuel and standard rates of VED
in 2011.
CO2 emissions (g/km) i6 auto=265, TD4 manual=194, TD4 auto=224

For the TD4 manual (194 g/km), this means that you paid £205 this tax year, £210 next tax year (08/09), this will rise to £260 (09/10) and £270 (10/11).

If the emissions stay the same, and you buy a TD4 in 2010/11, you'll pay a first year rate of £425 and then £270 per year.

For the TD4 Auto (224 g/km), this tax year £205, then £210 in 08/09, 09/10 will be £300 and 10/11, £310. First year rate if bought in 2010/11 is £550 then £310 per year.

For the i6 Auto (265 g/km), £400 this year, 09/10 £440, 10/11 £455. First year rate if bought in 2010/11 a whopping £950!!, then £455 per year.

Roll on the LRX !!
(£35 this year, £30 09/10 and £35 per year after that. No first year rate!)* Smile

All this was in this budget document: www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/media/2/5/bud08_chaptera.pdf Page 124, Table A.8a

* Based on an assumed g/km emission level of 120.

yep

Guess that's what they want us to do!

I loathe the idea of Govt. keep upping UK taxes on the motorist and then claiming it's a green tax, when its really just revenue raising for the Exchequer.

However, this change may just encourage LR and other manufacturers to speed up their R&D on better engines. BMW and a few others seem to be able to do it already ... come on LR!!

It's so not a green tax - because the increase for the top end cars is less than that on "family cars" (bizzare term) but mondoe etc. What irritates me is that they aren't using the revenue raised to provide alternatives - eg. improve public transport, cheaper trains etc.

good point

Good point tatters!

Looking at the detailed table of increases the TD4 road tax increases by 42% next year, whereas the Range Rover and the Lamborgini have an increase of just 10% Confused

So as usual our tabloid headlines of Chancellor goes for gas guzzlers etc. is someway off. It should read Chancellor goes for family cars!!

Older cars aren't exempt either as it would appear that the VED changes will be applied retrospectively and apply to all cars first registered after 6th April 2001...............................
Read about it here on the D3 forums - http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic19558.html How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?
