Suspension problem ....

My car has started to make noises from front suspension ... hhmmmm Big Cry

Thought I'd heard something a couple of times within the last week but just returned from a short local journey when I paid very close attention and there is definitely a knock coming from the front offside. It doesn't seem to be steering related, sharp steering inputs don't generate the noise but vertical movment, pot holes, speed humps etc seem to be the cause. Just what I wanted with our outing with Disco 3 guys on Sunday.

Anyone else had problems with front end suspension noise?

Can't seem to go for more than few weeks without something cropping up ... also got a noticable squeak from both clutch and gear change these days ... Now its all the hassle with getting it back to the dealer and the lack of courtesy cars at short notice ... they never make it easy ...

I have had a knocking noise when going of speed bumps, it sounds like the the suspension is fully extending when i drop of the far side of the bump. I have slowed down a little going of the bump and the noise is not noticable.

I have checed tyre pressures and tracking and everything is okay.

But, The other day I was driving along and I started to think the left side of my bonnet (same side as the noise) looked lower that the other, It caused me to pull over and check to see if my tyre was under inflated.

And, Today I was driving down the motorway and car felt floaty light and not as sharp as before

Trip to the dealers i think.... Sad

I had a knocking noise from the rear a couple of months ago. It turned out to be the rear antil roll bar nuts had come slightly loose. Landrover tightended them up and all was okay. They also ordered a new set of replacement nuts and fitted them as they are nylocks.

I've checked the obvious like wheel nuts and tyres pressures. Have also tried 'rocking' the car, but I can't get the suspension to deflect even a couple of mm's.

The speed bump factor is interesting, I never hit them fast anyway, but the noise is more noticable the slower you go!

Thanks for replies ... watch this space ...

I had the same problem, only seemed to make a noise when going slowly, dissapeared when you got to any sort of speed. Also when cornering sometimes slowly and going over bumps sometimes.

I did manage to replicate the noise by grabbing the top of the rear wheel (dirvers side only) and pulling/pushing towards me (quite vigorously mind you), in effect making the anti rollbar move, and then you could hear the knocking noise.

Took it into Landrover and a technition had a look, went with him in the car and he noticed it as soon as we turned out of the car park. Fixed in under an hour including them testing it on their "rocks" outside.

It maybe you have a similar problem at the front.

I had a knocking low down front near side. It was a loose antiroll bar link nut. Since being tightened it hasn't come back (yet!)

I'm thinking "kill or cure" ....

Thanks for the other suggestions, hope it does turn out to be something simple like the anti roll bar mounts ...

Hi Avtur,

I have posted a similar problem that I had since my early Freelandering days. I have tried 3 i6's, all with the same problem, one diesel which was perfect silent. I thouhgt it was an i6 problem, but all of the sudden I can see many people with diesel's (I guess) who have similar problems. My dealer has checked the anti-roll bar links (this is an LR bulletin for early FL2's) but the knock is still there. Now they seem to believe it's the steering box! Big Cry I have done nothing more to repair, since, as you may know my friend, I'm under negotiation with LR. Do keep us posted if you find out the cause. As far as your off-roading day is concerned, don't be afraid, if it gets any worse, you'll just make it easier for your dealer to trace the problem and repair it! So have a nice day tomorrow, my friend. Thumbs Up

Thanks qzx372,

This helped a lot. I've been underneath the car this afternoon, that is exactly the problem I've got ... Where then end of the anti roll bar picks up the drop link to the suspension strut the joint has come loose. there is a clear 2mm play in the joint. Have tried to tighten it up myself. found the 15mm nut that needed tightening but another tool, possibly something special is required to stop the shaft turning, so have not been able to fix myself.

But feeling much better that I know what the problem is.

Have taken some pix of offending joint will post in gallery soon.

So Tong here we come ...

Avtur, you have to use an allen key and a polygon key at the same time. Use the allen key for the inner part of the nut (to stop it from turning) and tighten with the polygon key. Hope this helps...

Hello

I am fresh (40 days, 3000 KM) Freelander 2 owner Rolling Eyes .
I like overall performance ..... but that suspension knocking is unbearable.
My local dealer told me that I am the first person to complain, which is obviously lie. Evil or Very Mad
I have tried 4 different new Freelanders and they are all knocking. Shocked
Does somebody found solution to this problem ? Bow down D90 TD5, D130 TD5, LR2.

First off welcome Thumbs Up

Looking at the above posts it seems that it is the anti-roll bar which is loose and simply needs a bit of a tighten.

Had the same problem with my front suspension knocking over bumps n humps. Took it back to dealer and they cured it; apparently front roll bar linkage nuts work loose due to the threads being painted at factory so when they are torqued up with air gun the nut isn't getting full torque because of the extra friction on thread caused by the paint, leaving joint slightly loose as per Avtur's posting. This is the explanation the head mechanic gave me and sounds pretty feasible. Been no probs after tightening.

Mine was 3 times at the dealer so far - no results. Rolling with laughter
They told me that everything is tight and OK. Banging Head
Seems to me that I have to do it myself. Very Happy D90 TD5, D130 TD5, LR2.
