Thanks for your thoughts.
I have researched this problem and been in touch with forums whose vehicles use the same PSA powertrain, ie Pug 4007, Citroen Cross, Mit Outlander.
They too are fed up with DMF failures but as PSA have not come up with a solution, a recall is unlikley.

My prevoius car had DMF without any problems after 120k.

My dealer did admit that 'we've done a few DMF's' on FL2 but the same crap parts are still fitted. They said that the friction plate is never worn. My DMF failed after just 24k. If the clutch was worn fair enough, but it was like new. I can't see how the DMF is a 'consumable' item. They've been fitted to HGV's for years.
It's nowt to do with emotion, i was a design professional in the automotive industry for many years and this sort of 'brushing it under the carpet' is frustrating. It should not happen.
I'm afraid it's nothing to do with MTBF or anything else.
It's about the most cost effective brand damage limitation.

Your experience is based on opinon, fair enough. But mine is based on fact and a wealth of experience in the auto industry. I know full well how they operate.
I'm not here to argue, i'm not made like that. But i do like fairness and in this respect L/R and PSA have let us down. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

The DMF was introduced the help engineers overcome NVH levels.
Dont know if this is common knowledge, just thought I would put it out there to settle any arguments Whistle

Perfect example is the VAG PD130/150 engine (as fitted to Fabia vRS/Golf GT TDi etc)
They are common for DMF failure, usually associated to driving style with the torque these engines produced

Lots of aftermarket solid flywheels available now, but the rattling you get through the gearbox at idle is unacceptable, hence the need for a DMF to smooth them out

What it does suffer from is a weak clutch plate, which fractures, and the springs in the centre plate break out, and jam the clutch cover

Now, with regards to Freelander 2 clutches and DMF's, I have worked in a LR main dealer for 4 years, before joining Strathearn Engineering and have been there for 3 years. In that time, I have only ever encountered 1 slipping clutch, and it was a high mile car.
IMHO, Disco 3 has more clutch issues than FL 2. We were fitting them to Disco 3's (under warranty) with less than 1k miles on them...

For what its worth, I would have no hesitation in putting my own money into a high miler manual FL 2. Other than servicing and brakes, they seem to like wheel bearings, and handbrake tends to stick on, but that's about the only issues we have ever seen with them...

I had my heart set on a D3, and the wife wants a Freelander 2. I was trying to justify why a disco is better, but I really can't...

given that I owned my 56 plate se manual for 2.5 yrs (30k), had NO issues, and part exchanged it last week with 54k on the clock, I purchase another manual FL2.

No worries.
great cars.

whoever gets my old car from sturges will have a gem

TD5 isnt a new Defender, TD5 is 13 years old now...

I'd have a look under the technical section of this forum and read the thread 'clutch slipping' if I was you and then say it's not a problem.
Mines doing it again after 15k since the last one was fitted.
Never worn a clutch out in 40 years of driving, my last car did 130k and the slave cylinder was leaking. Friction plate had very little wear so it's not my driving style.

Sorry, but the DMF in the PSA powertrain is crap. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

I did 35000 miles in my first Freelander 2 manual and I have done 17000 miles in the second and I have had no issues with the clutch on either of them.

Just going on what I know. In 7 years, I, personally have only ever seen 1 Freelander2 with a slipping clutch.

How many of these 'failures' have been down to driver error? Strathearn Engineering

Maybe most of the vehicles in your workshop were auto's, I dunno. Wished I bought an auto to be honest.
I've never had to replace a clutch in almost 40 years of driving, i never hold it on the clutch, use the handbrake and I keep my left foot resting well away from the pedal.
There is a Pug 4007 in the village next to us, new clutch after 22k. Same PSA powertrain.

No conspiracy here, no one has stuck up for the motor industry more than me Thumbs Up Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.
