we are looking at swapping our XType estate for an F2 or FFRR (if funds allow).
What are the things we should be aware of on the F2?
What trim levels do they have ?
I would prefer an auto but have heard about issues..
It will probably need to be a diesel - but we don't do too much regular mileage - do they have DPFs? do they regen automatically ? or would a 3.2 be better ? What sort of range do they have?

Budget is around £10k but no more...

owned one for two yrs now all in all very pleased with the car if you are not botherd about sun roof & full leather the XS model will have all the toys you need be open minded about what you read on here people seem to put the faults down and not the atrabutes of the vehicle  rainy-city

You would be lucky to pick up a later model F2 with a DPF for that kind of budget. As far as I know the DPF's all regen automatically.

The autos can be a bit thirsty. I am not sure that the autos have that much of a problem - it always seems that way because nobody posts when there is nothing to say...
The tanks do vary slightly from model to model but they are all in the 70 Litre range (15.3 Imp Gal) = £100 to fill up from empty (diesel).

I hope that helps. I have a 06my GS - 2,2 ltr engine manual and I think its great.. I was running an Audi A4 1.8 (petrol) manual and it only returned 28 mpg. Now I have a 4WD with more space in the back and get 35 mpg on a bad day!! and 42 on a good one (even more if i work at it) and the torque to pull a van.

As for bling - there doesn't appear to be a shortage of options either LR or aftermarket.

For the earliest 2006 Freelander 2 GS spec you would be very lucky indeed to pick one up for less than £11,000, an Auto would add another £500 to that. An 'S' spec would not have had the 'Terrain Response' but I may be corrected if wrong.

Manuals have suffered clutch/DMF problems, more-so than the Auto that a few members have had.

DPF never made its debut in this country until a 2009 unless you buy an import.

The petrol version is nice but thirsty with economy in the mid 20's.

thanks for the replies - not worried about not having a dpf - more worried about HAVING one and clogging it.

Sounds like my budget will need to be over 11k then.. is there anywhere i can look to get the specs? I know lr like to chop and change stuff.. is there anything that is a must have? do any have memory seats? cheers

I think you will have limited options with that budget.
Not many about sub 10K. Don't put petrol in a diesel. They don't run well.

The main thing is to be careful about what is in the spec of the year you are looking at, My current model XS has features as standard not included on the same XS I traded in.

For an older model I would be less concerned abou the gearbox, more the Diff bearings, soon found by growling bearings on a test drive. Prog rock is cool!

Hi and welcome to the site. I have owned both the 3.2 petrol and now have the 2.2 Td4. Both HSE spec, ie top of the range with all the toys including memory seat for the driver, heated screen, heated seats, leather, sunroofs, etc, etc. I love these cars, and only sold the 3.2 petrol due to the rather high fuel consumption. Now that diesel is getting more expensive than petrol it balances out, especially if you only do a low mileage each year. The auto box is good - I have had no problems with either car and, apparently, it is stronger than the manual box, although economy is slightly worse.

As for finding out the spec of a car you may be able to afford on your budget, PM me as I have an early brochure (2007 ish) which I could arrange to send you.

The only downside of the Freelander if you are looking for a family car is the size of the loadspace - not that big when seats are up. Check it out carefully. Its fine if its just for a couple though.

Most of the standard features are included in the handbook but it doesn't state to which model they can be found.

The 2007 book is the same as the one in my glovebox. I cant verify the accuracy of the 2010MY book.

As to memory seats - yes they are available but not on my 2007 GS as standard. Your guess is as good as mine when it comes to retro-fitting them.

dosent the petrol command a higher insurance group than the diesel, plus road tax is dearer to as for dpf if you are doing a lot of town driving dpf may be an issue with you i do 30miles a day to work and i give it a good run on the motorway approx 1 per mounth i have only had 1 x dpf issue and that was 6 weeks after getting the car and none since  rainy-city

the budget has now changed probably go to around 15k.. we want leather, no dpf (pre 2009?) not sure on auto or manual - jury seems out on that one

preferable need a dealer as we need to dispose of the xtype

so back on the lookout again cheers

On a search of Autotrader, for Freelanders under 5 years old, there are 1,873 diesels and 5 petrols nationwide! You'll be so restricted in choice of petrols that I might discount them from the start.

Mind you, you could always go and try one out near you:
