It's not about wanting a wider tyre, although it will help you float across boggy ground slightly better, it's simply the fact that the AT2 is a more agressive looking and (in my eyes) has a better road / off road split than the standard issue 'All terrain' tyres. If they where available in 235 width I would have gone for them.

The initial cost is perhaps slightly cheaper, but the advantage I see is 1) the off road grip is a vast improvement over the factory fit tyres and 2) They are expected to last twice as long as a factory fit tyre. Before I put on the HST kit I wanted to go for the 16" and some fat mud tires.
Here is mine fitted with 275\45\20.......... Rolling Eyes

EdSnow - thanks to your report I've just bought a set of 255/60R18 General Grabbers. They're supposedly rated for severe snow (even though they don't have the snowflake symbol) so I'm looking forward to using them this winter.

Have they ever bottomed out for you (ie, while off roading)? I'm slightly worried that I won't have enough clearance when the suspension fully articulates. Installed a hitch, stock roof rack, mantec skid plates, General Grabbers AT2 255/60/R18, and a rear access ladder. Also made a hitch-mount for the winch. Looking to install a front hitch, rooft-top basket, and lift kit.

I've not had my Freelander for a few years but from memory used to get 28-30mpg (UK gallon / 10.1-9.4l/100km) running around town, and 33-35mpg (8.6-8.1l/100km) on a run. This was with the GGAT2 255/60/18's fitted. With standard Goodyear Wrangler's I used to get 2-3MPG better. Freelander 2 XS 2.2 TD4 Met Black, with Winter pack, 18" alloys with General Grabber AT2 wellies, MANTEC Sump and Tank Guards
