It's a real shame what's happened to the Mini. Let's not forget that it was totally designed by Rover Group and i thought it kept some of the original Mini magic in the modern day. That car i think, could have been the saving of Rover but for some short sighted thinking.
Sales proved it to be so.
Anyway, i loved it, we bought one, it's 52 reg in the best colour red and still looks wonderful.

Now BMW are trying to make it as ugly as 3 series, 5 series, ad nauseam.

Such a shame, i could almost Big Cry Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Agree Pegleg, the "original" new Mini has a huge amount of character which the later BMW-only models just don't have. I've got a first generation Cooper S Works and I love it to bits Embarassed

Martin,
Went on track day a few years ago with a supercharged and broke the gearbox.
Along with three others. That box ain't up to 160 odd bhp.

Great car though, great fun, didn't half make me smile. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Never been a BMW mini fan, looked at one for the wife but it just didn't do it for me, if it had a roof, the convertibles though were a little more pleasing if the roof was down though Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Nick,
You need to drive one, the car is full of character. It's also a looker, at least in my eyes.
We've also got an old MX5 which is also great fun but not as much as the Mini. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

The one I was driving up until May 2010:

The very, very last of the "original" MINI, sourced new 6 months after they'd stopped building them!

Never, ever heard of gearbox problems on the 6 speed Getrag unit on the S and I've known that unit pushed to between 350 and 400bhp! Shocked

Thanks. If you think it was sad having to part with it from that photo, check out what it looked like underneath, even after I'd done 47,000 miles in it:

The thing that killed it for us in the end was simply the lack of space; neither my wife, or my daughter, wanted to sit in the back anymore Rolling Eyes

Looks a lovely example. Bet you had no problem selling. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Excelent post & spot on. BMW took all the credit but I love telling owners of the latest incarnation who actually designed it. It was due to be built in CAD2 at Longbridge, I went in there back in 2004 but we know the end result !!

EV,
I used to visit Longbridge regulary as part of my job. This was some years after the 'troubles'.
I thought Rover had begun to turn things around, R600 wasn't a bad car and R75 was a big improvement.
When i first saw the Mini, you knew instantly that it would sell and the team at Canley had surely come up with a winner.

There are those in high places who should be ashamed at the events since the Mini was conceived.

Longbridge was special place to me, difficult to explain why. Maybe it's the history and Stanley Edge had his first job there!! Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.
