Ive been keenly following this forum, as well as others here, on installing the 1490T, its been great to get some back ground knowledge before I try the same thing myself.

Im curious over one thing and hope someone might be able to help. I've been looking through the manual, specifically the under-dash fuse-box layout and not been able to identify the 'accessories' or 'power-socket' or anything else linked with that socket fuse?!
Am I missing something really obvious as I can only see the one mentioned in the rear (boot) fuse box.
Also once found how does one tap-into that circuit?

As for my proposed install I'll probably start my own thread to not highjack an existing one.
Anyway, to briefly introduce:

My intention is a little elaborate but has merit i feel.
I plan on installing a manual switch in line from the main power from 'that' socket sourcing from the fuse (wherever it is, Lol) to run a 4-port USD hub up behind the glove-box somewhere.
This will be accompanied with a manual switch and a step-down converter to 5V located out of sight elsewhere in the glove box area to selectively power-cycle the GPS as desired. The intention is to be able to power the GPS either through the cars ignition circuit as per the factory fitment or when 'switched off' through a spare socket on the USB hub, through power from a computer.
This should enable me to up-date maps as desired.

Anyway if anyone can point me in the direction of 'that' fuse I can start the install thread.

There has also been mentioned a good spot for your switch - being on the top edge where the glove box closes (there seems to be several un-used holes) 2002 Honda VFR800

Hi playtime, F5 is the fuse to use in the fuse box behind the glove box. This is ignition controlled, and the easiest way of getting power from it is to get a 10 amp min blade fuse with fly lead from Jaycar. Inside the glove box, just behind the latch, is a plastic moulding with a largish hole which is where I mounted an overriding power switch. Hope that helps.

playtime, I've put a couple of pictures in my gallery which show the fuse set up and the switch location which may help. Sorry about the poor quality but I couldn't get in to focus the camera properly. The wire in the top right corner is from the glovebox light.

G'Day Wintermute, No, there is no audio out feed on the Garmin 1490T; sound is only through the unit's built in speaker.It isn't near the radio quality, but OK for 'turn left in 300 metres' type things.

I have indeed considered locating the switch on side of the glove box lip. I'll have to have a look at the top for those unused holes though. If it saves me drilling its possibly a good thing.
I have indeed been frequenting JayCar and managed to source a lot of the parts mentioned. In addition Ive purchased a 12V to 5V step down for when it get to the USB Switch.

I'll check out he photos and possibly upload some of my own when time (and actualy progress on the project) allows.
