The overfill is not good but on the plus side Iain, you got £5 worth of oil for topping up at a later date Thumbs Up

Gradually the oil level drops with use of course. Since last service in February, approx 3500 miles of mixed driving, it has dropped from 3 - 4 mm to 1 mm above full mark. 2007 TD4 SE Manual

Hi trawlerman, I'm not going to name and shame the dealer reason being I was extremely happy with all other aspects of the service, and this is the only thing as far as I can see that was bodged, and they did offer to remove it.

also after trawling the internet it does seem very common practice, especially with BMW dealers for some reason ??

I think the general concensus is that when refilling with oil the mechanic is not giving enough time for the new oil to run down/settle before checking the final level, and you end up with anything up to a litre overfilled.

This and the fact that they want to pour in all 6 liters (even if correct is 5.9 liters)...
The difference between min and max on the dipstick is 1.5 liters.
The same way they could pour in only 5 liters and save some money.
Then the level will be right in the middle between min and max and not 3-4 mm above max. and nobody will complain... Laughing

correct Alex, a combination of factors, but I would imagine that around 80% of customers would never notice or bother anyway, so the dealers take no action to stop the practise.
