Apart from the mandatory RTFM response, what do you guys think to this:

I was once advised by a member on here (can't remember who) that if it's hammering it down with rain when driving down the motorway, it would be a good idea to engage GGS which splits the power 50:50 front to back and will aid stability and traction etc in the rain, especially when dealing with standing water.

However, a different member on here recently advised that GGS should not be used on the road unless there is actually some snow on the road.

So folks, whilst more suitable tyres will always be key to improving performance in the wet, what are your thoughts on GGS helping in very heavy rain and standing water? LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I was wondering exactly the same a few weeks back.
I found the following which would suggest it is not a problem, other than premature wear of certain components.

I know the RRS has a higher level of TR but the basic GGS program would be similiar? or is the RRS permanent four wheel drive?

All LR's are permanent 4WD bar the new ed4 models.

The FL2 delivers the vast majority of power to the front wheels and delivers more to the back if the car detects a loss of grip. But the TR modes split the power 50:50 I believe. So the FL2 is still classed as permanent 4WD. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I was under the impression that all GGS does on Freely's is make the TC and Stability Control more active i.e it they're triggered with less slip than normal driving, and the Haldex activates quicker. AFAIK the torque isn't spit 50:50 front and rear.

If you're talking about wet motorways as in flooded AND you're accelerating then maybe so, but even LR say that Terrain Response is for the harshest of conditions, and that road mode is more than adequate most of the time. Besides, just holding speed isn't going to break traction to the front wheels in water therefore rendering drive to the rear irrelevant anyway. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

Some, possibly all, of the modes change the acceleration response. I left mine on (GGS I think) when pulling onto an Autobahn and there was a very noticeable lack of oomph.

Yes I should have been more clear about the permanent 4WD. In standard mode with 50:50 at start and then 80:20 (I think) does the TR, split power according to needs or just revert to 50:50 when you come to a rest, implying that the wizardry only takes place during the special modes?

80/20 is correct for pre 2009MY

2010MY with the new haldex uses 95/5 (I think) for better economy...

I use Sand mode if i want to overtake as you get more oomph rather than less with the GGS.
