Advanced notice of possible interruption to Global Positioning Systems

The UK Ministry of Defence conduct occasional tests on military systems which may result in some loss of service to civilian users of the Global Positioning System (GPS) including in-car navigation devices and networks which rely on GPS signals.


Just in case anyone was experiencing problems with their GPS unit then this is probably why. ______________________

Dave, I'm a professional user of GPS, how is the UK MOD involved?
The system is solely operated by the US Dept of Defence without input from anybody else..................... unless you are meaning the DGPS system that relies on empirical data from GPS observations taken at known points and compared to GPS Data allowing the calcuation of errors and these are then retransmitted on marine VHF................................. This system is looked after by the UK Lighthouse Authority/ Trinity House/North Lighthouse Board/ and The Irish Lighthouse Authority.
There has has only ever been one outage of the GPS system and that was during the 1st Gulf war when the USDoD switched off the system to commercial users during bombing sessions on Baghdad.
5 years ago the USDoD made an undertaking that they would never switch off the system to commercial users as too many vital operations now depend on GPS. The only thing that the UK MoD is involved with with regards to "GPS" is the EU version called Galilleo which only has one satellite in orbit (the UK one!) all the rest are strike bound in the workshops of our European collaboraters! How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

Dave I would be very interested to hear about it because nothing has been promulgated by the Hydrographic Office
or in Navtex/ Nav-warnings recently. It could be that two of the satellites have got too close to each other and the signals of one have become degraded, this happens quite frequently but the system accuracy doesn't become unreliable - it goes from about an average of 15-25m accuracy to about 40-50m when this happens and they have to move one of the satellites into a slightly different orbit.
There was a bit of a cockup in the system 4 years ago when somebody in the NMC in the USA forgot to update the dates in the satellite almanac and the dates stuck on 14th March for about 5 days! Caused havoc at sea as we didn't know how accurate the rest of the system was and had to dust off our sextants that had been gathering cobwebs in the bridge locker for years! How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

You know, wizzing around my local area with the flashing arrow telling where I am, I never realize how much people really do require their SATNAV to be on and working.

I do remember my portable satnav stopping working due to been unable to get a GPS lock for a full day, and my brothers did the same. That was bad enough get the old A to Z out

All I can find out at the moment is that the UK MOD is testing some GPS jamming equipment. Not sure if this is to do with the US GPS system or Galileo.

UK MOD has been doing tests for most of this year down on the south coast and the US MIL on their east coast.

Thats all I can dig up at the moment. ______________________

UKdaves original info came from and can be found on OFCOMs website, and you can register to receive info on when a diminution of GPS is likely
